WALK THROUGH TIME WITH LEGENDS ON WHEELS

arlier this year, when the editors of Automotive News Europe set out to create a small online program recognizing the best cars of the last 125 years, the expectations were somewhat limited. Surely our readers across the European markets – and perhaps around the world – would have an opinion on their favorite cars of all time. Surely they would vote for their winners, organized decade-by-decade by our staff – from the very first Daimler vehicle to the latest concept cars. Surely we’d be lucky to get a few thousand votes. Try nearly 100,000. Everyone, including our partner on the project, MSX International, was stunned by the terrific response. Our online readers voted early, often and then voted again. And again. They voted in droves, from places like Romania and France and even America and, of course, the birthplace of the car – Germany. They voted with fervor, clicking their way through the decades and, ultimately, selecting the winners for the last 125 years, and selecting the winners of the future, or Legends of Tomorrow. After all of that voting, the results were tabulated and for the first time are revealed here, in the Automotive News Europe quarterly Executive Edition – appropriately unveiled during the time of the majestic Frankfurt auto

making their own mark on the industry. And our annual Eurostars list, which begins on page 88, chronicles their achievements. In truth, legends are all around us. Ultimately they are created every day, sometimes in ways we can’t imagine. We hope you enjoy our walk through time and we hope you enjoy this latest edition of Automotive News Europe. It is filled with personalities, profiles and, of course, plenty of legends. Enjoy Frankfurt! show. To honor the anniversary of the automobile and chronicle the results, Automotive News Europe and MSX have also partnered on a commemorative hardcover book, which is available now at legendsonwheels.com. The winners represent a swath of our history and mark a place in time. Or, as MSX CEO Fred Minturn said: “A legend is someone or something that inspires. Our industry has been built on one generation of automobiles serving as an inspiration for the next. The cars selected to receive our Legends on Wheels recognition deserve great praise for serving as that bridge, from the past through today and into the future.” More legends will be created in Frankfurt, and perhaps can be found in our guide to the Frankfurt show which starts on Page 30.
