Industry makes 2012 gains

T

he value of Europe’s eight publicly listed car markers
surged ahead in the final quarter of 2012. Their value,
as measured by the Automotive News Europe/PricewaterhouseCoopers Transaction Services Shareholder Value
indices, rose by 18.8 percent in the quarter, extending the
6.3 percent improvement achieved in Q3.
Partsmakers also benefitted from the upsurge, albeit to a
lesser extent than automakers, with an 11.2 percent rise
in the quarter. Europe’s car retailers gained, too, with a 7.7
percent increase in value extending gains achieved in the
preceding three quarters.
This came against a background of more modest improvement in European equity markets, with the UK’s FTSE up 1.3
percent, Germany’s DAX up 5.5 percent and France’s CAC up
8.9 percent in the fourth quarter.

Porsche surges
The star performer in Q4 was Porsche, up 33 percent. This
followed a table topping 19 percent gain in Q3 and reflected
the strength of luxury car sales in emerging markets. In Q4,
the German sports car maker was helped by news that a huge
legal case against it, alleging manipulation of the VW share
price in 2008, had been dismissed.
Second place in Q4 went to BMW. The Munich-based company showed no gain in Q3 but it managed to put this well
behind it with a 28 percent improvement in Q4. Like Porsche,
emerging markets contributed to this, with sales of BMW- and
Mini-brand vehicles sales in China up 40 percent in 2012.
Announcing a 14 percent rise in its third quarter profits in
November, BMW also confirmed its full-year profit guidance.
Volkswagen Group took the third slot in the Q4 ratings among
automakers, with a gain in value of 25 percent. Investors took
comfort from the company’s statement that it was on target
to at least match, and hopefully beat, its 2011 operating profit
of 11.3 billion euros.
