LARGE MINIVAN

CAR-DERIVED VAN

The Ford S-Max, Europe’s top-selling large minivan since
2007, kept its lead over the VW Sharan, despite each
model’s sales falling 20%. The Fiat Freemont almost doubled sales to 25,557, but this was not enough to prevent
the segment from shrinking by 9% to below 200,000.

The VW Caddy kept the lead in the car-derived van segment despite a 10% decline to 51,701. For years, the
Renault Kangoo and Citroen Berlingo dominated the
segment, but the Caddy ended French automakers’
supremacy in 2012.

MID-SIZED PREMIUM

The new generation of the BMW 1 series
benefited from the Audi A3’s changeover
to gain leadership in the compact-premium segment. Because of a near twofold
increase in sales, the new Mercedes B
class rose to No. 3 and nearly passed the
A3 for second place.

MARCH 2013

The VW Tiguan strengthened its place as
Europe’s top-selling medium SUV, a title it took
five years ago. Tiguan’s sales grew 32% to 150,907.
The Hyundai ix35 was up 22% to 87,809 and the
Kia Sportage grew 26% to 83,045. Pushed by those
strong performances, the overall segment was up 15% to 672,930.

The Mini two-door model line, which includes
the hatchback, Clubman, Cabrio, Roadster
and Coupe, maintained its lead in the entry-premium segment, but the Audi A1 is
closing the gap. Audi sold 97,689 units of the
A1 compared with 103,205 Minis.

Despite an 18% decline to 11,026, the Hyundai
Santa Fe extended its lead in the large SUV
segment, which declined by 28% overall to
23,283. The segment’s full-year volume was
about one-sixth of what it was in 2007 when
a record 126,500 large SUVs were sold.

MEDIUM SUV

The Dacia Duster’s dominance in the small SUV
segment continued despite Duster sales dropping
24% to 103,382. The new Opel/Vauxhall Mokka
had a strong start, climbing to the fifth place in
the segment even though it was on sale for just
the final two months of 2012.

With sales up 18% to 154,138, the new BMW 3
series regained the lead in the mid-sized premium segment. The 3 series was also helped
by significant sales declines for the segment’s other two heavyweights, the Audi A4
and Mercedes C class. Those declines pulled
the segment down 9%.
