AUTOMOTIVE NEWS EUROPE COVER STORY Advertisement Honda and Castrol announce a new Cooperation Agreement Honda Motor Europe has entered into a three-year cooperation agreement with Castrol as its recommended lubricants supplier for cars in Europe, with the ultimate aim of reducing emissions and improving fuel economy in line with Honda's philosophy and customer demand. T he Honda-Castrol cooperation is one born from common objectives: maximising performance and fuel economy. Honda strives to deliver high-efficiency products equipped with advanced technologies that reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions without compromising driving performance. The relationship with Castrol, one of the world's leading innovators of lubricant technology, will help Honda meet its targets of optimum performance and efficiency. "Honda shares with Castrol the pursuit of increased performance and greater efficiency through technical excellence and innovation, and we are certain that this cooperation agreement will prove highly beneficial to our customers," comments Koji Arai, Director of Customer Division, Honda Motor Europe Ltd. Modern engines have to extract higher levels of performance relative to their more compact dimensions, placing significantly greater demands on the lubricant that is used. Manufacturers and consumers are turning to oil suppliers to ensure that the most modern and innovative engine designs are protected by appropriately advanced, high performance lubricants. Castrol pioneers new ways to improve the efficiency and performance of engines, and the development of low-viscosity oils, which have been co-engineered with Honda, will be key to helping Honda achieve impressive fuel economy and performance. However, low-viscosity presents a challenge to lubricant manufacturers. Low-viscosity oils allow greater fuel efficiency, but could be too thin to provide adequate protection for older engines. Conversely, higher-viscosity oils offer better all-round protection but at the expense of fuel efficiency - and they may not be suitable in a modern engine. The three-year cooperation agreement brings with it a new range of co-branded products, Castrol EDGE Professional H, and genuine oils for use in all current Honda engines - gasoline, hybrid and diesel, including the all-new 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine. "Honda and Castrol are launching a new range of low-viscosity lubricants, Castrol EDGE Professional H, for Honda engines to maximise performance, protection and efficiency," says Dr Angela Keeney, Technology Manager, Castrol Automotive Lubricants - Europe & Africa. "We are pleased that Castrol has passed Honda's unique test requirements." The new 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine is the first engine from Honda's new Earth Dreams Technology series to be launched in Europe. The Earth Dreams Technology engine series seeks to deliver excellent performance and environmental values. "Our motivation has been to make many small detail improvements that, together, make a major difference." The key target for Honda's development engineers was to reduce the mechanical friction of the 1.6-litre i-DTEC engine to the level equivalent of a petrol engine. At 1,500rpm, the new engine has around 40 per cent less mechanical friction than Honda's 2.2-litre i-DTEC engine, resulting in lower emissions and improved fuel efficiency. It also improves the engine's response, making the car more fun to drive. Using the right low-viscosity oil is core to this achievement, allowing the engine to turn over more easily and the oil to circulate throughout the engine more easily. Castrol EDGE Professional H and Honda genuine oil are the only oil ranges recommended by Honda Motor Europe and are available through Honda's car dealer network.
