Insurance centre for automotive research and training in
Winnipeg will bring the city
repair expertise that has cost
body shops millions of dollars
in travel and lost productivity.
"It's fantastic," said
Steve Chipman, president of
Birchwood Automotive Group,
which owns 15 dealerships and
two collision-repair centres in
Winnipeg. "It allows us to have
our technicians get training
here in Manitoba.
"Most training required
by manufacturers is done
in Toronto,
Vancouver,
Calgary and
we're losing
[technicians'
productivity],
plus there's a
cost to sending
them away."

around 2010 it became apparent that technology in the automotive industry was moving at
a "seismic" pace and the best
way to prepare technicians in
Manitoba would be to train
them in the province.
"The velocity of change is
unbelievable," Guimond said.
"Things go so fast that sometimes repair procedures can
have a lag of up to six months.
It's six months after the
release of a new vehicle where
they're providing the repair
procedures."

done in Manitoba return damaged vehicles to the same safety standards as when new.
"It's about making sure
nobody dies
or is injured
because the
vehicle wasn't
repaired properly."
On display
at the opening ceremony
were a number of vehicles
that illustrated MPI's point:
a BMW i3,
both as a finished car and as a bare chassis. The i3 uses a carbon-fibre unibody; for certain types
of damage, only engineers
in Germany are allowed to
approve repairs.
Gary Lin, collision-repair
program specialist for BMW
Canada, said that while training to repair the i3 and i8
vehicles will continue to be
done in the United States, the
company plans to train local
technicians on how to estimate repairs to both vehicles.
"In Canada, only five
shops can repair this vehicle," he said of the i3. None of
those is in Manitoba, though
Birchwood BMW is in the
process of certifying as a
BMW i-Retailer and certified repair outlet. Winnipeg's

Canada, said the centre provides economies of scale and
convenience to the province's
repair industry.
"You need significant
expertise to repair those vehicles properly," he said. "So I
think the centre provides the
venue for people to be trained
and also it becomes a hub for
state-of-the-art technology."
The centre is in eastern
Winnipeg, in the JW Zacharias
Physical Damage Research
Centre, and employs 80 staff.
Jack Zacharias, the former
president of MPI, for whom
the building it named, said as
the province's sole provider of
vehicle insurance, MPI noticed
that when it opened the damage research centre, repair
quality began to improve,
sometimes dramatically.
"In our early years at MPI,
we too often found ourselves
in the position where MPI and
the repair shops were bickering over the best way to repair
a car," he said. "It quickly
became apparent we had to
become the experts in vehicle

Costly bagel, coffee for Ontario lot attendant

A LOT ATTENDANT AT A WHITBY,
Ont., dealership got an unexpectedly
costly bagel and iced cappuccino when
he drove a sold vehicle without permission to a nearby coffee shop for an
early lunch.
It cost Ryan Caldwell his job at
Owasco VW in July 2016. Now the
Ontario Labour Relations Board has denied him
termination pay.
Caldwell was supposed to be taking inventory

at a nearby storage lot when he took a new VW
Tiguan with dealer plates to the coffee shop and
then had the audacity to eat in the customer's car.
"Caldwell was familiar with the
company rules," Vice-Chair Gita
Anand wrote in the board's decision in
September. His activities "constituted
willful misconduct and disobedience."
General manager Bob Verwey Jr.
said, "Who in their right mind would
do that kind of thing?" adding that
Caldwell even skipped two hearings on his
claim. "We should have called the police right
away and had him charged for theft." - ANC
