 Body shop operator's model of dealer partnerships could expand

he purchase of a Canadian operator of body shops by a major consolidator could create more opportunities for franchised U.S. and Canadian dealerships to profit from collision repair,
executives say.
Boyd Group Income Fund said last month
it would pay roughly $143.8 million U.S. to
acquire Assured Automotive Inc., headquartered in Ontario.
Assured operates 30 "intake centers" in exclusive partnerships with local dealerships
that send repair work to the company's 38
body shops. Boyd Group officials say they
will consider adopting that model in its other stores.
Boyd, headquartered in Manitoba, operates
364 Gerber Collision & Glass body shops in 20
U.S. states, along with 42 Boyd Autobody &
Glass shops in western Canada. Boyd Group
plans to operate Assured as a separate branded unit.
With the Assured purchase, Boyd Group will
operate 474 collision locations in North
America, with annual revenue of more than
$1.11 billion U.S. Boyd is among the four largest consolidators of body shop ownership.
Assured intake centers, typically staffed by a
single employee, are stand-alone offices in local dealerships near the company's full-service repair centers.
Vehicles to be repaired are sent from the
dealership to an Assured collision center.
When repairs are complete, the
vehicles are returned to the
dealership.
The intake centers enable
dealerships to offer collision services to their customers without having to
maintain an in-house body
shop, says Boyd Group CEO
Brock Bulbuck.

2014. "Anybody who comes in or calls us for
body work, we direct them to Assured's office
here on site," says Richard Bellm, the dealership's vice president.
"We stand behind their work, so if customers have a problem they can't sort out with Assured, they'll come to us," Bellm says. "It's a
good arrangement."
Assured pays a monthly fee to occupy the office at the dealership, although Bellm would
not say how much.
In addition, he says, the dealership sells a

large volume of wholesale parts to several Assured body shops.
Bulbuck, in announcing the Assured purchase, said he was "not aware of any others
that are using this [model] anywhere else,
where customer-capture intake centers are at
auto dealerships. Assured seems to have figured out the secret sauce for a business arrangement with dealerships that is creating a
win-win."
"And we're going to look to try to leverage
that secret sauce."
