Paint protection film not needed
As the former CEO of an automotive paint
supplier, I am surprised that people are
willing to spend extra money to protect the
paint on their newly purchased vehicle
("Clear path," June 2017).
It's an emotional issue and not a required
extra expense. The automotive paint industry
annually spends millions, if not billions, of
dollars on product development,
improvement and testing.
Each exterior color is tested for five years of
Florida exposure. Specifications are
continually upgraded to prevent field failure
issues. This mandates new chemistries and
application techniques.
Even though I have been out of the
automotive paint industry for nine years, I am
still proud to see what my former company's
products look like.

Tech shortage overstated
As a service technician, I agree that we need
younger talent entering the industry
("Wrenches to laptops," June 2017). But I
don't think things are as bad as people have
been saying.
The days of needing technicians to perform
repairs and diagnosis on vehicles are coming
to an end. The future will require parts
changers who will plug in modules and flash
them.
I also believe that there will be regional
service centers; few, if any, independent

garages; and few to no chains in operation. It
stands to reason that if fewer technicians are
needed, there will be fewer jobs.

Don't ignore service customers
In response to Richard Truett's column
"Why customers stray" (June 2017):
When I get my Toyota serviced at the
dealership, my salesman always comes to the
customer waiting area to say hi and chat. The
service salesman and cashier thank me and
are very courteous.
When I have my GMC Canyon serviced, the
F&I person, salesmen and parts people never
look up to recognize anyone. How about a
"Hey, how are you?" even though they don't
know you?
What am I, chopped liver? Don't service
customers put money in the till also?
