Why: The elder son of G.D Crain Jr., Business Media Why: Following months of anticipation, Carey brought Condé Nast Portfolio to market in April. Condé Nast’s first foray into business media, the magazine (350,000 circ.) went to a monthly frequency in September. While reviews so far have been mixed, Carey has vowed to grow the publication to a circulation of 650,000 within the next five years. O’Brien in 2006, recently partnered with media-buying agency SRDS to introduce a small-business network for advertisers. He also appointed five brand directors in a restructuring designed to better leverage the company’s brands. Rance Crain has also overseen the recent expansion of the company’s portfolio, steering the development and launch of FinancialWeek last year. The longtime editor in chief of Advertising Age, he’s been a vocal advocate of maintaining editorial quality and integrity. Roland DeSilva What: Managing partner Where: DeSilva & Phillips Why: DeSilva is major player on the sell side of b-to-b media deals. In March, he folded the print version of InfoWorld and shifted all content online. He also shrank the print editions of two other major IDG titles, Computerworld and Network World, from tabloid to newsmagazine format. Jim Casella What: Chairman-CEO Where: Case tion of Prism Business Media’s $530 million acquisition of Penton Media as arguably his biggest achievement this year. (Prism took Penton’s name after the deal closed in February.) “It’s been a wild time,” French said. “We were able to launch redesigns, recruit new executives and continue to run the day-to-day operation smoothly amid merging two of the biggest players in the industry.” He said two of Penton’s events, Waste Expo and the Special Event, had record turnouts this year, while its New Hope Natural Media division continued to expand its presence in events. Top priorities for 2008: Making better use of Penton’s extensive database will be job one next year, French said. He added that he wants to push Penton’s products internationally and will also look to grow its custom media business. “Custom services thrive in a shaky economy,” he said. —M.S. Interactive Media Why: Casella, former vice chairman of Reed Business Information, rolled out CIM in February, backed by private equity firm Austin Ventures. He’s interested in acquiring media properties in the IT, health care, energy and green markets. At press time, Casella was bidding on several b-to-b media properties. L. Gordon Crovitz What: President of Dow Jones Consumer Media Group, publisher of The Wall Street Journal Where: Dow Jones & Co. Why: Crovitz played a key role in the debut of The Wall Street Journal’s comprehensive redesign in January. He’s also worked to improve ad sales throughout the company, including a recent restructuring of the Journal’s ad sales organization to encourage more integrated ad buys. Media in the sale of its Professional Services Division to BNP Media, and Massachusetts General Hospital Psychiatry Academy in its 25-year agreement with Reed Exhibitions to provide a suite of continuing education offerings. Keith Crain What: Chairman Where: Crain Communi- James P. Dolan What: Chairmanpresident-CEO Where: Dolan Media Co. Why: Dolan owns local newspapers and b-to-b media properties in 21 U.S. markets.
