PLASTICS NEWS, April 4, 2012 39 Milliken touts sustainability of clarifier for polypropylene By Charlotte Eyre EUROPEAN PLASTICS NEWS ORLANDO, FLA. — Milliken & Co. (Booth 25023) is demonstrating the sustainability benefits of clarifier Millad NX 8000 at NPE2012 in Orlando. Millad NX 8000 is more soluble in polypropylene than other clarifiers, allowing manufacturers to process the material at 10-15 percent lower temperatures, said Wim Van de Velde, global product manager of the plastics additives business. The lower temperatures, in turn, reduce energy use and carbon dioxide emissions, he said. In addition to the environmental benefits, polypropylene clarified with Millad NX 8000 can cut costs and increase productivity through 10 percent faster cycle times, and the additive’s superior clarifying performance means polypropylene can replace lesssustainable materials in packaging applications, the firm said. At NPE, Milliken is launching a new computer app to demonstrate the sustainability of Millad NX 8000. “Companies can use this app to show the dollar-per-ton savings of using the new Millad clarifier with PP, as well as reductions in things such as manufacturing hours and carbon dioxide use,” said Van de Welde. “The user can then email the results directly to its customers.” For example, the new app shows that injection molding a 5-liter thin-wall bucket from PP clarified with Millad NX 8000 results in energy savings and an emissions reduction of 7 percent, while temperature is reduced by 104° F. Polypropylene maker Pinnacle Polymers in Ridgefield, Conn., has created two new grades with Millad NX 8000: 1335C3 and 1403C3. Beverage cups made with the new 1335C3 material are on show at the Milliken booth. Milliken also is showing Hyperform additives, including Hyperform HPM-20E for polyethylene. “Polyethylene can now be nucleated, which is quite a new development,” said Reed Walker, global marketing and business development manager for plastics additives. “Hyperform improves the barrier qualities of polyethylene by 30-50 percent and improves cycle times by anything from 5-20 percent.” Hyperform clarified polyethylene can be used in a large number of applications, ranging from caps and closures to food packaging to barrels for chemicals. Introducing IRIS Co-Injection Technology, barrier solutions for food and beverage containers. UL tech staff offering free consultations By Brandi Shaffer PLASTICS NEWS STAFF Here at NPE, Mold-Masters will unveil this new revolutionary solution that will forever change the way you make barrier closures and thin wall packaging. ORLANDO, FLA. — Independent safety science company Underwriters Laboratories (Booth 37042) is offering free 15-minute consultations for NPE attendees. Northbrook, Ill.-based UL conducts testing for certification and standards and will have technical experts on-site to answer questions. “Our consultations are for any plastics customer to know how to go through the process and get certification and get information on our programs,” said Wanda Sitar, marketing manager for UL’s global chemicals industry. In addition to one-on-one consultations, UL is giving presentations in the Technology Theatre in Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center to discuss issues and provide insights from panels of UL experts for companies in the plastics industry. “We hope our presentations will help spark dialogue among attendees on how to avoid innovation pitfalls, maximize opportunities to global access, and find efficiencies in the supply chain through certification,” said Manish Bhatnagar, general manager of UL global chemicals.
