FAKUMA SHOW DAILY

Fakuma 2017 is the first European trade show for PolyOne
Corp.'s newly acquired Comptek
high-temperature materials portfolio.
Avon Lake, Ohio-based PolyOne acquired Comptek Kunststoffverarbeitung GmbH of Diez,
Germany, in early 2017. The firm,
founded in 1992 by Sten and Ursula Karlström, produces a broad
range of colorants, additives and
formulations based on high-temperature thermoplastics.
Comptek employs 20 at its only
production site.
Comptek is "a very specialized
business using plastics that are
at the top of the pyramid," Holger
Kronimus, specialty engineered
materials general manager, said
in an interview at Fakuma.

PolyOne previously had made
some similar materials as part of
its colorant chromatics business,
he added. Applications for the
Comptek materials include dental grips in health care and aerospace parts.
Also at Fakuma, PolyOne is
highlighting uses of thermoplastic
elastomers in automotive applications where the materials can
provide lightweighting as well as
vibration and sound dampening.
PolyOne's OnFlex TPEs also are
being used in internal air quality
applications for the automotive
market. The Chinese market is
focusing on performance in that
area, Kronimus said.

Kraiburg adding TPE production
in Germany and Malaysia
Materials maker Kraiburg TPE
GmbH & Co. KG is having a busy
2017, adding a new production line
in Germany later this year and another one in Malaysia by mid-2018.
At Fakuma, CEO Franz Hinterecker said the new capacity is
needed to handle growth across
several market sectors, including
automotive, consumer, medical
and industrial. Waldkraiburg, Germany-based Kraiburg can base its
compounds on a range of different
thermoplastic elastomers.
"We're
seeing
double-digit
growth," Hinterecker said. "The
important thing is for us to get the
right fit for our customers. We can
mix whatever they need."
Kraiburg recently commercialized a new line of Thermolast
K-brand TPEs that officials said
have excellent adhesion to EPDM.
They're being aimed at automotive
applications such as EPDM window trim and sealing profiles with
molded TPE corner joints and end
elements.
Hinterecker said the new materials also offer better processing
and weight reduction vs. other
products. Company officials said
that the auto sector is the largest
and fastest-growing market for
TPEs.
Kraiburg also has developed
soft-touch TPEs for the electronics market that can resist oils and
creams when used in smartphone
cases and wristbands.

The firm's new line in Malaysia
is expected to create eight to 10
new jobs. Earlier this year, Kraiburg also opened a sales office in
Seoul. In addition to Germany and
Malaysia, Kraiburg operates a U.S.
plant in Duluth, Ga.
Kraiburg TPE was founded in
2001 as a unit of industrial firm
Kraiburg Group. Kraiburg TPE employs 550 worldwide and posted
sales of around 170 million euros
($200 million) in 2016.

tion uses, as well as in window
seals. The firm's thermally con-

ductive materials, which can be
based on a variety of resins, are
being used in metal replacement
applications such as metal sinks
and electronic housings, Kronimus said.
Other product solutions on
display by PolyOne at Fakuma include Gravi-Tech density modified
polymers and LubriOne wear-resistant solutions. Gravi-Tech are
composite materials that provide
the look, feel and sound of metal
but deliver the design freedom of
a polymer. The LubriOne line is
inherently lubricated polymers
that eliminate the need for added
oils and greases between moving
components.
Plastics News ranks PolyOne
as North America's largest compounder and concentrates maker
and one of its largest resin distributors. The firm posted sales of
just over $3.3 billion in 2016.

A. Schulman adding
capacity at multiple sites

Materials maker A. Schulman
Inc. is boosting production capacity throughout Europe and
the Middle East.
Earlier this month, Fairlawn,
Ohio-based Schulman opened
a masterbatch concentrates
plant in Cerkezkoy, Turkey.
The plant employs 50 and has
annual production capacity
of 17.5 kilotons (38.5 million
pounds).
"We see Turkey as a way of
getting into the Middle East,"
Ralf Behringer, Europe Middle
East and Africa sales director,
said in an Oct. 17 interview at
Fakuma. He added that Schulman previously had supplied
its customers in Turkey from
sites in Europe.
Also in October, Schulman
began test production of its
massive joint venture compounding plant in Yanbu, Saudi
Arabia. The plant eventually
will have annual production
capacity of 100 kilotons (220
million pounds) of polypropylene compound capacity, Horst
Klink, EMEA performance materials vice president, said at
Fakuma.
The formal start of the Yanbu plant is set for January, he
added. The project is a JV with
Saudi resin maker National Petrochemical Industrial Co.
In
September,
Schulman
opened a massive new production line making primarily white
color concentrates in Givet,
France. The new line, with annual production capacity of 45
kiltotons (100 million pounds),
is one of the largest such lines
in all of Europe, Behringer said.

lines for color and additive
concentrates were installed at
Schulman plants in Poland and
Hungary earlier this year. The
European masterbatch concentrates market is growing at an
annual rate of 3 to 4 percent,
according to Behringer.
In January, Schulman plans
to add a new line making sheet
molding compounds with carbon fiber content at its plant in
Hamburg, Germany.
Product highlights for Schulman at Fakuma include:
* A silver metallic product range for automotive and
household appliances.
* Schularec grades, a new
concept that fills the demand

for recycled materials.
* A complete product range
of low-emission solutions for
interior automotive applications.
* Icorene 9005 polyamide for
use in rotomolded automotive
tanks.
* Lytex styrene-free sheet
molding compounds.
* Schulamid nylon 6 and 6/6
carbon-fiber-reinforced
compounds.
Schulman
was
recently
named an official compounder
for use of glass bubble additives made by 3M. Klink said
the 3M materials can reduce
product density by 10 percent.
Schulman posted sales of $2.5
billion for fiscal 2016. The firm
ranks as a leading compounder
and concentrates maker in both
North America and Europe and
as one of Europe's leading resin
distributors.
