(NASDAQ: PRGO) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of over-the-counter pharmaceuticals and nutrition products for storebrand markets for customers such as Walgreens, Rite-Aid, Wal-Mart and Meijer, and it’s getting bigger. In late March, it announced an $808 million agreement to buy Gordonsville, Va.-based storebrand baby formula maker PBM Holdings Inc. Location: Kalamazoo 2009 revenue: $6.7 billion Chairman, president and CEO: Stephen MacMillan Why it’s one to watch: Stryker Corp. (NYSE: SYK) is a giant in the $35.6 billion global orthopedics market, with 2009 revenue of about $6.7 billion. Despite a recession that saw Stryker’s revenue grow just 0.1 percent from 2008, the company’s revenue grew by double digits from 2000 to 2008. The reason can be found not only in Stryker’s global coverage — the company sells products in more than 120 countries — but also in a graying population and a sharp increase in obesity. A 2008 report by Global Industry Analysts Inc. put the 2015 market for orthopedic instrumentation at about $54.5 billion. Stryker makes everything from highly engineered metal joint replacements and spinal implants, to plates and screws that repair fractured bones, to surgical power tools, patient beds and hospital room furniture. — Profiles by Michelle Martinez Request Foods Inc.
