HELLUVA TOWN INSIDE Seeing the forest for the trees The photographer behind the New York Botanical Garden’s newest book is quite established—in mergers and acquisitions. In October, publisher Monacelli Press will release Magnificent Trees of the New York Botanical Garden, featuring about 200 shots by Larry Lederman, a retired partner of law firm Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy. After about a year in his own yard, Mr. Lederman decided it was time to, well, branch out. “I had this thought one morning that I ought to do a known venue,” Mr. Lederman said. It just so happened that he was on the board of directors at the city’s best-known venue for all things arboreal, the New York Botanical Garden. While still working full-time at Milbank, Mr. Lederman spent his Saturdays trekking though the garden’s native forest. “I was hooked,” he said. “You can walk through that forest and have a sense of timelessness.” After retiring in 2004, Mr. Lederman got to devote some more time to trees. He read up on photography and landscape composition and taught himself Photoshop. Though he started out using film and making black-andwhite slides, Mr. Lederman said, he quickly embraced digital and has never looked back. He considers himself a nature enthusiast first and foremost. Todd Forrest, the garden’s vice president for horticulture and living collections, wrote the text. The book’s proceeds will benefit the garden. “I’m interested in being able to walk in the woods and take pictures of trees,” he said. “If it’s art, fine.” —ali elkin HIGH TIMES ON THE LOWER EAST SIDE: Chef Simone Apostoli offers an innovative menu of affordable nouveau Italian cuisine at the Bowery Kitchen. Season of eateries BY ALIX STRAUSS ith summer just about over, local eateries are again in the spotlight. This season’s crop of newbies include some from familiar faces and a few from new contenders. Plenty of attention is being paid to chef Zak Pelaccio’s Fatty ’Cue in Williamsburg, which reopens in October after a full face-lift. The foodie crowds are also salivating over Top Chef winner Harold Dieterle’s second endeavor, the Marrow, which bows in November in the former Paris Commune space in the West Village. Places like Andrew Carmellini’s Library at the Public Theater and Marcus Samuelsson’s American Table Cafe and Bar at Lincoln Center are sure to be popular with theatergoers. ¶ The eight culinary gems listed below, in opening order, are flying under the radar.
