The result, “WWII & NYC,” features 500 objects and photographs, 13 new films and extensive interactive-media elements that take up the entire museum. It opens Oct. 5. ¶ Ms. Reaven, 57, led a team of more than 50 staffers and contractors to put the show together. “You have such a big topic, and you have to figure out how to tell that story,” she said. “It can be frightening if you don’t have confidence, but that’s the fun part.” ¶ The curator’s favorite object that will be on display is the membership card that belonged to a Jewish librarian who infiltrated a Nazi group in New York as a spy. “The exhibit is filled with these stories of individuals who were worried about the frightening events around them,” she said. ¶ It will also feature radio broadcasts from that time and the story of the production of military training films—which were made in New York— among many other pieces. ¶ Before she discovered her passion for history, which led her to get a doctorate in the subject at NYU, Ms. Reaven was a documentary filmmaker. She decided to switch careers after working on a film with Bill Moyers for public television on the history of the automobile and Americans’ love affair with their cars. ¶ Though “WWII & NYC” has yet to open, Ms. Reaven is already hard at work on her next exhibit at the Historical Society. It is about how the federal Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 affected New York’s Chinese-American community. That show is slated to open in 2014. —miriam kreinin souccar See EXECUTIVE MOVES on Page 8 October 1, 2012 | Crain’s New York Business | 7 http://www.TheWeek.com
