But he might find you ‘It’s a crazy culture that’s developed around these types of crimes’ Don’t look for David Szuchman on any socialmedia sites—you won’t find him. ¶ That’s because as chief of the Manhattan district attorney’s cybercrime and identity-theft bureau, Mr. Szuchman knows too much. He is more likely to be found trolling the social-media pages of suspects in identity-theft cases than “liking” a friend’s wedding photo on Facebook. ¶ Mr. Szuchman, 40, has been working for the Manhattan D.A. since 1997. But it wasn’t until Cyrus Vance Jr. was elected in 2009 that he was tasked with heading the beefed-up cybercrimes unit. The explosion of mobile technology has made it so much easier for consumers to shop and bank online—and for criminals to steal their identities, Mr. Szuchman said. The D.A.’s office is handling twice as many cybercrime cases than it was six years ago. Even Mr. Vance has been the victim of a stolen identity. ¶ “It’s a crazy culture that’s developed around these types of crimes,” Mr. Szuchman said. “And to us, cybercrime is every case.” Not just the obvious ones: hacking, malware or fraud. Violent and white-collar crimes can also have a tech element if, as is often the case, a datasaturated smartphone that offers clues is involved. ¶ The recent attacks against big banks, reportedly perpetrated by Islamic “cyberfighters,” is just the latest example. ¶ Mr. Szuchman has seen a variety of local cases: a Web designer filing false tax returns from an Internet café; nonprofit employees stealing donors’ personal information; waiters at steakhouses skimming credit-card numbers and selling them to local gangs. ¶ Naturally, Internet use is closely monitored in Mr. Szuchman’s household. ¶ “A healthy dose of paranoia is a very good thing,” he said. —andrew j. hawkins Mr. Paranoia See EXECUTIVE MOVES on Page 8 October 8, 2012 | Crain’s New York Business | 7
