This chart was first published Nov. 19, 2012 COMPANIES NY Area’s Largest Privately Held Companies Ranked by 2011 revenue This list is the most comprehensive available, although it’s not possible to identify and include every privately held company that would qualify. Data were provided by the companies or obtained from sources including Crain’s, Dun & Bradstreet, Forbes, Gale Group, Hoover’s and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. All data should be considered estimates. To qualify, companies must be independent, privately held entities with no parent. They must be headquartered in New York City or Nassau, Suffolk or Westchester counties in New York, or Bergen, Essex, Hudson or Union counties in New Jersey. Nonprofits, hospitals, mutual companies, travel agencies and partnerships—including accounting firms, law firms and consulting firms—are excluded. Some estimates for 2011 revenue are based on 2010 data. ( $# "( (! $ ( ( ( ($! ( ( ($! ( ("" ' '! "# ((#!!! ' %!" (&#"$ ! Transammonia Inc., a fertilizer and petrochemical company, has returned to the top of Crain’s largest privately held companies list for the first time since the recession. As oil prices have increased, so have profits. Revenue grew to $11.3 billion in 2011, up 34.3% from the year before. Owned by founder Ronald Stanton and his family but run by outsider CEO Henk van Dalfsen, the company introduced new products like petroleum coke, and increased shipping volume to 31 million tons from about 27 million in 2009. About 60 of its 427 employees are in its midtown headquarters, but trading mainly occurs in China, India and Pakistan. “The middle class is growing there,” said Fred Lowenfels, the company’s general counsel. “The increased need for food means more need for fertilizer.” —emily laermer PROFIT MARGIN BY INDUSTRY Net profit margin of select industries in the Northeast INDUSTRY 2010 2011 PAST 12 MONTHS TRANSAMMONIA INC. #1 Information* Manufacturing Construction Accommodation and food services Retail trade +2.10% +3.94% +1.03% +0.65% +1.37% +6.00% +4.58% +2.33% +1.25% +1.28% +5.84% +5.05% +2.33% +1.40% +1.13% *Includes publishing industries, motion picture and sound recording industries, data processing, information services and Internet broadcasting services.
