Last month, it received a $1 million award from the MacArthur Foundation. This week, it will announce that for the first time, two technology executives are joining its board: Sarah Feinberg, Facebook’s director of policy communications, and Scott Mitic, CEO and founder of online security firm TrustedID. Now the organization has the money and expertise to improve its infrastructure to make the 45,000 interviews it has collected—as well as all future interviews—more publicly accessible. For now, the only way to hear the majority of the interviews is to visit the Library of Congress, but one session is boiled down to three minutes, from 40, every week and broadcast on NPR. Though there are privacy and technology issues to address, StoryCorps founder David Isay says expanding the recordings’ reach is one of his main goals. “We are collecting the wisdom of humanity,” he said. —theresa agovino Annie promos GIANT STEPS: Stephen Starr has four restaurants in the city, with more on the way. Lucky Starr Philly restaurateur sets sights on expanding his mini-empire in New York P starr restaurants The Broadway musical Annie is making the rounds at the city’s top hotels. At the Chatwal, on West 44th Street, fans of the beloved orphan can sleep in a replica of Daddy Warbucks’ room. The hotel commissioned Annie’s set designer, David Korins, to transform one of its penthouse suites into the character’s room, replete with seven pieces of framed artwork Mr. Korins created for the hotel and a glass-encased miniature replica of the Warbucks house. “We replaced our artwork with his drawings,” said Gemma Keating, director of marketing for the property. The promotion, which ends June 20, also includes tickets to the show and a program signed by the cast members, among other perks. Partaking in the offer requires Warbucks-style riches, however: A one-bedroom suite at the hotel costs $3,995 per night, and a two-bedroom is $4,495. The Chatwal’s offer comes on the heels of a recent promotion at the St. Regis, where guests were offered a pair of tickets to Annie and a ride to the theater in the hotel’s Bentley. —lisa fickenscher BY LISA FICKENSCHER hiladelphia’s most famous restaurateur, Stephen Starr, is surprisingly direct about why he is setting his sights on the Big Apple. “That’s where the money is,” said Mr. Starr—borrowing Willie Sutton’s explanation for why he robbed banks—adding, “and the glory.” ¶ Unlike the notorious outlaw, Mr. Starr earned his millions by selling food and drinks at his restaurants, known for their theatrical ambience, energetic vibe and creative cuisine. His empire, Starr Restaurants, includes 21 eateries in Philadelphia, four in New York and three more in New Jersey, Florida and Washington, D.C. ¶ “New York is the big time,” he said in his office in Philly’s downtown historic district, “and it is where we want to grow.” ¶ It’s a strategy he has already implemented quietly over the past two years—and has been ramping up. Mr. Starr, who says he is 50-something, is among the elite handful of out-of-town restaurateurs who have created a mini-empire in New York. ¶ “I can’t think of anyone who is not based in New York and has done such important restaurants that have succeeded here,” said Tim Zagat, co-founder of restaurant guide publisher Zagat Survey.
