In an effort to be environmentally conscious, hair product manufacturer Herb UK is removing propylene glycol from its products and replacing it with propanediol, a renewably sourced material that is certified by EcoCert. “This is great news for our customers, who are always looking for cleaner salon products,” remarks Rebecca Gregory, technical director of Organic Salon Systems. “Our salons and their clients always appreciate efforts made to evolve the products they use into something more natural.” Propanediol is derived from corn kernels and is shown to be an effective moisturizer.
Disaster Relief in Missouri
On August 7, Matrix partnered with Hairbenders Salon of Joplin, Missouri, for a back-to-school Cut-aThon to benefit the victims of the massive tornado that hit the city in May. Months after being destroyed in the disaster, Hairbenders Salon reopened its doors in a temporary location, where Joplin residents enjoyed free haircuts in addition to live music, a barbecue and Matrix goodie bags. Thanks to the support of colleagues in the Matrix Summit Salon program and donations from State Beauty Supply, Hairbenders owner Joplin’s smaller residents get back-to-school ready at the Cut-a-Thon. Kevin Lane says the salon is temporarily being housed in a former cosmetology school while it is rebuilt elsewhere. “We’re open, we’re back where we need to be, we’re in relief mode!” Lane exclaimed on the day of the event, as Joplin community members filled the salon to receive their haircuts. “This place is packed today. We’re having a blast!”
