Good Humor Man
It’s amazing that, in just a little over two
years, Colin Walsh has instated not one, but four highly successful initiatives (Spread the Love, MyMatrixFamily.com, Chairs of Change and Mannequin Mania) at Matrix that aim to empower hairdressers by affording them the support and education needed to not only lead a prosperous career, but one that leaves them fulfilled and, ultimately, happy. Maybe the Matrix U.S. vice president/general manager’s accelerated success can be attributed to his passion—a word he uses often and, well, passionately—or maybe it’s the simple fact that he wholeheartedly believes in a little thing called humor. “I think a sense of humor is a critical asset for anyone, but particularly for leaders,” he shares. “The ability to laugh at yourself, and find the lighter side of so many situations, is critical.” Especially, he confides, in an industry where passion, human sensitivity and, yes, humor fuel all-important creativity. “For me, a sense of humor can play a role in saving you if it fundamentally sustains your energy and passion. In this economy, I think everyone welcomes the opportunity to smile, laugh or feel good. And I certainly share in that feeling as much as anyone.” Aside from an appreciation for comic relief, Walsh shares with Launchpad his take on the rewards of mentorship, why visiting salons will always be en vogue, and how hairstylists’ energy and passion are at the very heart of Matrix. Launchpad: One of your initiatives, Spread the Love (STL), sends six cosmetology students on a six-month journey across the U.S. where they connect with 51 Matrix salons that mentor them. The students then shared their stories via social media. Was there a particular stylist or salon whose mentorship story really made an impact on you? Colin Walsh: Honestly, [choosing] one would be impossible, because it’s this continual, humbling, invigorating and inspiring effort that I get to witness, share in and learn from everyday. I love this program because we reconnect [the Matrix salons and stylists] to their passion and their purpose of why they became a part of this industry in the first place. LP: What kind of response have you gotten from the Matrix salon owners that mentored the STL students? CW: I think if anyone has loved STL more than I have, it’s been the salon owners. [This program] really connects to an opportunity for them...STL is about reconnecting the salon and its stylists to the role they play in people’s lives, and how they can continually truly pay it forward. No matter where I travel in the country, a STL salon always shares with me how exciting this program has been for them and how much the experience has changed their team, their community and the events they’ve been involved in because they now, more than ever, really feel empowered and supported. LP: You thread this idea of a support network— a family—through a lot of your Matrix initiatives, such as MyMatrixFamily.com. CW: The intention of this site was to create a “virtual” family—no matter if the individuals are a Matrix stylist or not. We wanted to provide a place where all stylists can reach out, connect to other stylists, have fun, interact, and really get support from their peers, no matter their proximity. LP: You’ve accomplished so much in such a short amount of time! What do you foresee the next 10 years bringing for the salon industry, for you and for Matrix? CW: The world is moving so fast in so many ways—especially in regard to the Internet and how we communicate—and we’re speeding

toward a potentially “low-touch, high-speed” society. That said, I believe fundamentally the role of a stylist—someone who is a personal touch point, who can transform someone’s life in a physical way—will never be found or mimicked online. This experience will always be found in a salon chair. So I believe the stylist’s role will only be elevated in the next 10 years. But at Matrix, we’ll have to be prepared to help stylists connect to their customers, to grow their business and to be successful through new media. LP: What do you consider your biggest accomplishment? CW: That one is an easy one for me. Hairstylist Arnie Miller founded Matrix 30 years ago around the beliefs, passion and energy that stylists inherently have. Matrix, as much as any company in the industry, shouldn’t feel like a corporation. It should feel like it belongs to the stylists who support it, engage in it, and believe in what it stands for.
