Haute Couture Hair
RR: In the beginning, we had only one television station—CBS. They’d call me for hairpieces or to ask for other hair-related advice. CBS’s first big show to come to Florida, The Big Payoff, was the first network program that I did. I worked with The Jackie Gleason Show throughout its entire run in Florida [1963-1972] and had the privilege of working with old-time stars like Judy Garland and Lucille Ball. Actually, Lucille Ball was my first celebrity client around 1950. I made her a hairpiece to match her own hair so she could just pull it back and pin the hairpiece over it so it looked like she was wearing her iconic updo. O: Having a relationship with a custom wigmaker is so important to a hairdresser, especially one like me who does a lot of editorial work. Your wigs are like haute couture, designed for use on the cover of a fashion magazine. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the cover I did of Kate Winslet for Vanity Fair [December 2008], but the wig you did was so wonderful. I really love feminine styles, especially those from the ’60s. That was an amazing time for wigs. Are today’s wigs different? RR: Sure, there are new technologies. Rather than share his own story, master stylist Oribe opted to interview legendary wigmaker Ruth Regina for this very special edition of First Person.
lightweight foundations. But wigs are made for lots of reasons, and how they’re made depends on their purpose. Wigs for performances are one thing and are often very different from those made to wear every day. I like to incorporate openings in the wigs so clients can blend in their own hair when possible and appropriate. Clients wearing hairpieces for volume, length or enhancement can do so without anyone else knowing the secret. O: Your wigs never look like wigs. They appear natural. Part of that is how you dye them. Do you do that yourself? RR: Thank you. That is important to a woman. No one wants to hear that her wig looks great. She wants to hear, “You look great.” Hair can be many shades. We blend each hairpiece to match the client’s own hair and style it the way she wants. People shouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the wig and her real hair. That’s a no-no. O: You also did the hairpiece we used for Cher’s Vanity Fair cover [December 2010] when she starred in the movie Burlesque. Did you ever work in burlesque?

Oribe: I love walking into your shop [in Bay Harbor Islands, Florida]. Like a kid in a candy store, I want to buy everything— and I love the photos on the wall. Some of them were taken when you worked on The Jackie Gleason Show, right? Ruth Regina: Yes, I grew up in the business. I had the advantage of learning my profession from my parents. I’m actually an eighth generation wigmaker! As a little girl, I’d go to their shop after school, do my homework then head to the workroom to create hairpieces. They were like playthings to me. O: Throughout your career, you’ve worked with a number of amazing television stars. How did you get involved in entertainment?

Regina worked with Hollywood icons, including Judy Garland.
