RUNWAY REPORT Wella Professionals Playing Dirty Eugene Souleiman helps designer Narciso Rodriguez step out of his clean comfort zone. Wella Professionals global creative director Eugene Souleiman is feeling free—free to be a little adventurous and dangerous. “I’ve wanted to change what I’ve been doing for [designer] Narciso Rodriguez for years!” he exclaims breathlessly backstage. “Narciso always wants clean, pretty and minimal. Now we’re taking a different direction; much stronger, much dirtier. This style is for the assertive woman who says, ‘It’s my way or the highway!’” The hairstyle, a “seared—but in a good way” knot, embraces a bit of grit: It’s roughedup and sex-ified, the perfect companion for Rodriguez’s minimalist sportswear. To achieve the look, Souleiman sprays Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz Beach Texture Spray onto the roots while they’re dry and then blasts them with heat, blow-drying against their growth pattern ( “This gives a sort of wild texture to the hair,” he explains. He then pulls the hair back into a tight ponytail, and twists the tail into a rough-hewn knot, pulling the ends through haphazardly. Emulsifying a heavy helping of Texture Touch Reworkable Clay in his hands, Souleiman then pushes the paste into the sides and crown, dirtying up the style. He tops off the confident look by saturating the hair around the temples with Shimmer Delight Shine Spray to suggest that “she’s been outside running.” After tugging at the roots to allow for a square, masculine shape, Souleiman looks satisfied. “I love that she’s not pretty in an obvious way,” he sighs. “I love that we’re taking a new direction. I’m excited!” —Karie L. Frost 12.11 Images: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images; Victor Virgile/Gamma-Rapho; Karl Prouse/Getty Images
