Goldwell lead artistic director John C. Simpson may love Dallas and “Call Me Maybe”—but nothing compares to his passion for the pro-beauty industry. —as told to Alyson Osterman-Kerr
I have so many! Most recently, it’s “J Squared.”
Word(s) you use the most?
“Werk!,” “Gettt Ittt!,” and “AaaaaaaMazing!”
Celeb you’d most like to make over?
I love Kelly Osbourne so I don’t really want to make her over, but I’d like to give her 50 more shades of gray!
Favorite Hollywood hair color?
Mila Kunis...she has the perfect shiny brunette shade.
When did you know you wanted to be a colorist?
I spent my entire childhood in my Great Aunt’s salon and then assisted her in high school. Hair color and makeup came quite easily to me, and I loved the endless boundaries and possibilities those two things could create; I wanted to paint.
Annie Humphreys for the classic fundamentals and Tina Fahey for pushing the rules.
When I stress, I am a lip-biter and knuckle-cracker...and I kinda love dropping the “F” bomb!
First thing you do when you wake up? Favorite trait?
I play my day out in my head and think of each objective, grab my phone, quick-glance the messages, then go for coffee.
Last thing you do before you go to bed?
I am a humble guy who embraces enthusiasm and laughter. Those traits, along with the ability to share what I love, is why I believe I have gained success in education.
Most beloved possession?
After my Clarisonic cleanse and masque, I replay my day and make peace with it so I do not go to bed angry or troubled.
TV show you can’t get enough of?
I’m addicted to “Dallas,” “Misfits,” “Girls” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
Song that inevitably pops up on your iPod?
My foil comb, given to me by a dear friend, and a Saint Christopher medallion on a special chain, given to me by an amazing person who received it from Mother Teresa.
Greatest piece of advice?
Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” remix and Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Love them!
If your life were a movie, what would be its title?
Never give up! Strive for perfection and as soon as you attain it, start over so there is always room to absorb more.
If you weren’t a colorist, what would you be?
“Yestergay, the Story of Reinvention and the Drive for Perfection.” Other titles include “Liquid & Latex” and “Watch me Werk!”
Best thing you ever ate?
I would always be a colorist! I have tied my love of architecture, art and science into the perfect creative world. OK…maybe I’d be a pop sensation who would eventually end up selling on QVC.
Peanut butter hamburger with foie gras.
“Life is not a dress rehearsal. Live it, love it and create it.”

Little Caesars Pizza assistant manager. I had a fab visor that showcased my permed Boy George fringe!
It’s so wonderful to see the growth of others, or to know that you were the inspiration to so many who not only love what they do, but have accomplished their goals.
