SALON OF THE MONTH Bigger and Better R d Sickler Salon Spa is beauty and wellness mecca with a Rod Si kl S l & S i a b d ll i massive facility—and an even bigger heart. Rod Sickler Salon & Spa 2520 Village Green Place Champaign, IL 61822 217.403.1790 statement—“Art, Service, Passion”—reminds employees to give 100%, but nowhere is this more apparent than in the company’s penchant for giving back. Sickler, a stage artist for Sexy Hair, is currently gearing up to participate in the manufacturer’s nationwide cut-a-thon for Look Good...Feel Better on October 10, during which salons across the country will donate $10 per cut to raise money for the nonprofit. But this campaign is only the tip of the charitable iceberg for Sickler, who throws two huge bashes for charity every year. Red Hot Winter comprises two weekends of fashion and hair shows, stand-up comedians, dancers and singers; and Red Hot Summerfest is a seven-night music festival. Raising money is a given but, more importantly, Sickler raises awareness for causes by allotting a $400,000 marketing budget for billboard, TV and radio advertising to promote the events. To supplement these mega-fests, he participates in an average of 30 charitable drives annually, working with worldwide nonprofits as well as local families in need. “I’m blessed to have my health and a strong business, so as long as I’m healthy and have a couple of nickels, I’m going to help someone,” Sickler smiles. “It’s about being a good citizen, doing the best you can, and being a part of something bigger and better.” —Tracy Morin Considering that the Rod Sickler Salon & Spa in Champaign, Illinois, houses 21 hairstyling stations; makeup and color bars; two spa rooms for waxing, massage and esthetics; a chiropractor’s office with acupuncture services; two cosmetic dentists; photography and personal training studios; and a medical spa, it’s no surprise this beauty warehouse averages 1,6001,700 clients per month. “We’re proud to offer so many services under one roof—I don’t know any salons with this many—and proud to be working and expanding in a tough economy,” owner Rod Sickler enthuses. (Opened in October 2005 with 3,000 square feet, the facility doubled in size last year.) Sickler found success with “superlative” customer service, aggressive marketing and a focus on education (think weekly and monthly staff meetings and a rigorous training program for new employees). The salon’s mission The Rod Sickler Salon & Spa recently doubled in size and now includes such amenities as a tattoo area and chiropractic care in addition to its stellar hair salon and spa services.
