Editor’s Notebook Going the Distance Calling all women: It’s up to you to forge your own artistic path women It’s u path. A few weeks ago I attended a conference for Affinage in San Diego, during which the company introduced its new Global Ambassador, Tracey Devine. The Aberdeen, Scotland-based hairdresser and salon owner has one seriously impressive C.V., as they say across the pond. She’s won the Scottish Hairdresser of the Year award in 2006, 2007 and 2009, and in 2012 she won the Men’s Hairdresser of the Year title. Devine is a member of the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame and has been crowned Fellow with Honours by the Fellowship of British Hairdressing in recognition of her achievements as both innovator and educator. I was thrilled to see her onstage and to learn that she’s taking creative control of the company. And it’s funny, because as she and her right-hand woman, Janer Stewart, were styling models onstage, Devine brought up what I was already thinking: “You know, it’s not every day that you see two very talented women onstage together.” Because, sadly, you just don’t. Yes, there are several very talented women who determine the creative direction of a brand, but the majority of creative directors are men. Again, I’m not saying that there aren’t loads of talented and even famous female hairdressers; there are. What I’m saying is that there should be more, especially leading the creative direction of a company. And I am keenly aware that the companies in the beauty industry are more than happy to enlist women into leadership roles. Are we women holding ourselves back? After all, this trend isn’t unique to the beauty industry. According to Maternal Instinct, a company that markets to mothers, women control 80 percent of consumer spending, yet only 3 percent of companies have female creative directors. Nevertheless I do have hope for the future. Just as the recent Cheerios commercial sparked debate about interracial marriage and what it means to be a “normal” family, so too do I hope that more women take control and become more than the “woman behind the man.” It’s up to you, ladies. The time is now to take control and lead the future.
