Trendsetters/Runway Report Empower Grip Hero Product: OSiS+ Dust It Mattifying Powder—a whole tube of it per model! Ukrainian female freedom fighters inform Schwarzkopf Professional’s aerodynamic knot at Prabal Gurung. Blast Away Hanlon gives one final blast of heat to the hairline for an “in motion” effect. 74 | BEAUTY LAUNCHPAD | AUGUST 2013 They’re hardcore; they’re very active women. They wouldn’t care about having their hair done.” VICTOR VIRGILE/GAMMA-RAPHO VIA GETTY IMAGES; ANDREEA ANGELESCU P erhaps the most truly inspiring inspiration of the season landed at the Prabal Gurung show; the designer centered his collection around women’s empowerment, and what it means across several cultures—from the U.S. decision to open combat positions to female troops, to Ukrainian female fighters challenging human trafficking. Hearing the backstory retold in terms of hair by none other than the best backstage storyteller himself, Hair Lead Paul Hanlon, only reinforces just how empowering beauty can be. Hanlon, working with Schwarzkopf Professional, takes his cue from the Ukrainian fighters mentioned in Gurung’s key inspiration, noting, “They’re hardcore; they’re very active women. They wouldn’t care about having their hair done.” He likens them to the modern-day gym-goer; she’s not going to fuss over her hair; she knows she’s going to be sweating out her aggressions, and she often simply throws her mane up to keep it out of the way. The same holds true here: Such an active, empowered woman would sport a quick, spontaneous hairstyle— something she tosses up out of necessity. To lend hair a weathered, lived-in appeal, Hanlon preps with OSiS+ Grip Volume Extreme Hold Mousse ( and then “power-dries” it. Each girl’s entire head receives a full bottle of OSiS+ Dust It Mattifying Powder, which makes hair “very powdery, matte and pliable. It’s like she’s been sleeping outside and now has this wild texture,” Hanlon explains. To conjure an organic, spontaneous feel, he uses his fingers to rake back hair into a ponytail, ties the tail into various “shoelace knots,” and then sprays the entire look with OSiS+ Elastic Flexible Hold Hairspray. As a final subtle detail, Hanlon blasts the hairline with a dryer so that the girls appear aerodynamic. “It looks like a photograph of a woman caught in motion,” he explains. And though the hair is meant to look unfussy—as if it were an afterthought—we’re pretty certain women who care about their hairstyling will latch onto this empowered look.
