Paralysis Resource Guide - (Page 193) RECREATION TEAM SPORTS Basketball Basketball is probably the most well-developed sport for wheelchair users in the United States, for good reason. The game has been played for 60 years, originated by World War II vets in rehab on the East and West coasts. There are teams and divisions all over the country for men, women and juniors. Some colleges suit up wheelchair hoops teams. The game is fast and fun, and quite entertaining to watch. There are dozens of very competitive teams in the United States. Each team utilizes four players, mostly quads. A player has 15 seconds to advance the ball into the opponent’s half-court. The player with the ball must pass or dribble every 10 seconds or a turnover is awarded. The idea is to cross the end line on the court and score a point. The other guys do what they can to stop you. It’s not a game for polite recreation.
