Colorado Springs – a Distinctive Destination!

ach year, The National Trust for Historic Preservation prepares a list of America’s Distinctive Destinations. Twelve communities across the country are selected that offer cultural and recreational experiences different from the typical vacation destination. The selected destinations boast a richness of character and exude an authentic “sense of place.” In 2011, Colorado Springs was awarded this honor because of its historic appeal and modern culture. Visitors to Colorado Springs enjoy commanding views of Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain as well as a treasure trove of historic sites and exciting attractions. To date, there are 144 Distinctive Destinations located in 46 states throughout the country. The title of Distinctive Destination is presented to cities and towns that offer an authentic visitor experience by combining dynamic downtowns, cultural diversity, attractive architecture, cultural landscapes and a strong commitment to historic preservation, sustainability and revitalization. In each community, residents have taken action to protect their town's character and sense of place. Visitors can discover many unique and distinctive locations that helped gain this recognition including Garden of the Gods Park, the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and Cave of the Winds at preservationnation.org/ddd
