Colorado Singles Resource Guide - Fall 2007 - (Page 7) Kansas City, “wicked fine musicians with a passion for Celtic Music,” according to the festivals website (scotfest.com). Another notable concert is the Colorado Celtic Concert which features the nationally known group Seven Nations, dubbed a “Dave Matthews Band with Bagpipes.” The highland athletic game events like hammer throws and caber throwing contests, seem nutty by today’s standards, but their origins were probably the ancients’ version of a physical for joining the military. If watching a mere man toss a 19’7”, 140 lb. caber end over end is not your thing, check out the AKC dog competition of just about every kind of terrier, collie or retriever known to doggie-kind (all British Isle breeds)! Competitions abound elsewhere: Pipe bands, drumming, Irish dance, Highland dance, Celtic folk music and jousting. The Irish/Highland Festival, the largest of its kind west of the Mississippi, draws over 60,000 people, and famous faces like Jay Leno’s have been known to appear. For a little bit quieter time, enjoy the Estes Park Film Festival, September 14-16. (estesparkfilm.com) Most films are screened at the historic Park Theatre, the oldest movie theatre west of the Mississippi, with the suspense and horror films being screened at the historic Stanley Hotel, of Stephen King’s “The Shining” fame. The quirkiest festival of them all, The Elk Fest, September 2030, has really caught on, says Suzy. The educational seminars about elk, habitat and birds of prey, along with the archery contest and the Art Studio Tour going on about town this weekend, augment going into Rocky Mountain National Park for the rest of the fun. With gourmet picnic and Elks in Estest Park bottle of wine in hand, everyone heads to the park for a grand tailgate party while awaiting dusk and the bugling calls of lonely bull elk building their harems. For the very vocal, you can participate in an elk bugling contest that pulls competitors from 5 year-olds to professional callers. There are Elk Tours on shuttles featuring informational tours over speaker systems. Suzy to the rescue again with some interesting facts: Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National park have the largest concentration of elk population in all of Colorado, an estimated 3,000 head. Herds of 150 to 200 where bulls have started gathering their harems can be spotted all over town. If you’re traveling across town for a scheduled event, build in an extra 15 to 30 minutes to allow for the elk-jam you’re likely to encounter. And above all, don’t honk! One year, a perturbed bull elk squared off to the auto of a female honker and proceeded to climb up the hood, over the top and back down the trunk of the car.
