Credit Union Magazine - January 2009 - (Page 10) ON MY MIND Whether print will survive is a moot point. People’s habits change. It was from a blog about digital publishing posted by John Weir, creator of Digital Magazines. Weir, a publisher of both print and digital magazines, claims he’s weary of discussions about whether digital magazines will gain traction with the public. During the past few months, we’ve been developing the digital version of Credit Union Magazine, which debuts this month at credit unionmagazine.com. It has been a road filled with lessons, to be sure. One lesson we learned early on: It wasn’t a question of whether we should go digital but rather when to do so. That was driven as much by our evolving readership as by today’s evolving technology. Gomez claims arguing whether print will survive is a moot point. “Do we expect magazine readers to become any less sophisticated as time and technology roll by? Things change, platforms evolve, business models adjust, and people’s habits change, too.” Our readers are changing in the way they want information. Not unlike many of you, I prefer to read some things online and others in print. I spend most of my day communicating and working online, which is why some of the small luxuries in my life involve print— books, magazines, and newspapers. For these same reasons, we’ve redesigned creditunionmagazine.com. You’ve asked for articles online, a searchable archive, Web exclusives, and podcasts. Subscribers now can log in to creditunionmagazine.com, enter their passwords, and access all of these features and more. Publishing today isn’t print or digital. It’s both. And Credit Union Magazine is here for you—as always—in whatever format you prefer.
