You need a busy day before a holiday. You need someone who has dropped his or her guard.” Credit unions must train employees that rules are rules, and they must be followed, she adds. If employees believe they must break a rule, they need approval to do so. Common avenues for social engineering, says Daeke, include: repair people or other vendors who gain access to the credit union and its employees and systems through false pretenses; and u Inadvertent disclosure of proprietary information by employees in public places, such as retail stores or sporting events. Daeke warns against discussing the credit union’s systems and products in public places. A good defense against social engineering, she says, is to document all information available to the general public through the credit union’s Web site, public documents, and other sources. “Know whom you’re dealing with,” she u Bogus Many of your employees are one paycheck from financial trouble. So says a study $5.6 billion asset Alliant Credit Union, Chicago, conducted with the International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists (ISCEBS), Brookfield, Wis. Key findings from “American Workers: Getting Ahead or Just Getting By?” include: u Employer benefits such as health and retirement plans are seen as important, but primarily for future use, not present needs. Many employees have financial needs requiring immediate help; u Employees with financial concerns spend significant work time dealing with personal financial matters; u Employees generally are pleased with their income levels but they can’t seem to save money or get ahead financially.
