2009 NATIONAL CONFERENCE INTERACTIVE PREVIEW ISSUE AASL 13th National Conference • Reno, NV SEPTEMBER 2009 • CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA Why I'm Heading to Charlotte (and You Should Too!) By Cassandra Barnett AASL President n the pages that follow, you will hear of many great reasons to come to AASL's 14th National Conference. I've made a quick list of my top ten reasons for heading to conference and encouraging my colleagues to join me! 10. It's in Charlotte! And, let's face it, Charlotte is a happening city. With the Catawba River, NASCAR, and many different cultural events, Charlotte is the perfect place to bring family or just enjoy a personal mini-vacation. Plus, the temperatures are much better than most parts of the U.S., but still cool enough to not make you homesick for those cold fall nights. Pack the most into this professional development experience, including some fun and adventure. (read more on page 8) 9. Exploratorium. This is the showcase of “best practices” in school librarianship. The Exploratorium features more than 50 small programs occurring simultaneously. The programs are geared to give attendees a taste of current research, projects, and best practices in the school library media field. 8. One Book, One Conference. This conference is teeming with opportunities to help school library media specialists prepare students to function in a 21st century society. This is your chance to share your thoughts on what it means to be a “digital native.” If you haven't read it already, come prepared to share your views by reading Born Digital: Understanding the First Generation of Digital Natives by Urs Gasser and John Palfrey.
