in the Society, ASH has awarded
Samuel Silver, MD, PhD, with the
2012 Exemplary Service Award. Established
in 1998, this award recognizes
individuals whose excellence
in service, extending over a period
of years, has significantly advanced
the interests of the Society. ASH
honored Dr. Silver yesterday evening
during the President’s Dinner.
For several years, Dr. Silver has
been at the vanguard of the Society’s
efforts to improve reimbursement
for Medicare billing codes,
guide local coverage decisions,
help to correct Medicare reimbursement
limits for multiple drugs and
biologics used by hematology prac-
and several other committee and
special task force appointments.
This past fall, Dr. Silver moderated
the ASH Webinar on Autoimmune
Hemolytic Anemia, which was supported
by The Henry Loring Masters
Foundation. He has also led
multiple ASH initiatives, including
helping to create the ASH Consultative
Hematology Course and improving
the quality of hematologic
care through practice guidelines.
Of his continued involvement
with ASH, Dr. Silver commented
that out of all the professional societies
to which he belongs, “ASH
reflects my interests throughout all
the phases of my career: as a basic
scientist early in my career, as a bone
marrow transplant physician in
mid-career, and currently as a clinical
consultative hematologist with
an interest in the quality of care we
deliver.” He continued, “ASH has
given me much more than I could
ever give back.”
Currently, Dr. Silver is a member
of the faculty at the University of
Michigan Medical School, where he
serves as assistant dean for research
and specializes in malignant and
non-malignant hematology.

“I have specifically worked on issues
of remuneration in the clinical
arena, with an underlying philosophy
that we should get paid for
what we do,” Dr. Silver said about
his work. “Sounds simple, but in
this complex health-care environment,
little is simple.” Dr. Silver
has represented ASH at multiple
conferences and forums, including
the American Medical Association’s
Specialty Society Relative
Value Scale Update and Current
Procedural Terminology committees
and coalitions of other medical
specialty societies. He has also cochaired
the ASH-American Society
of Clinical Oncology Carrier Advisory
Committee Network Meeting
and will do so again in 2013.
Ever faithful to the mandate of
the Society, Dr. Silver has brought
ASH’s message to the steps of Capitol
Hill, meeting with Members of
Congress and their staff to discuss
practice issues. His involvement
and expertise have positioned him
as a leading advocate for practice
and physician reimbursement.
Within the Society, Dr. Silver has
been a leader on many other fronts.
He served as councillor, chair of the
Committee on Practice, chair of the
Subcommittee on Reimbursement,
