Saturday, December 8, 2012 ASH NewS DAily Page B–3 ® Visitor Training Program: ASH Members Train Doctors From the Developing World H ealth-care professionals confront unique hematologic issues in every part of the world. In resource-poor countries, many of these challenges may be surmountable given the proper inputs of technological and intellectual capital. The ASH Visitor Training Program (VTP) employs the latter method by essentially exporting the expertise of ASH members to healthcare institutions in the developing world. Each year, recipients of the VTP award spend up to 12 weeks at the institution of an ASH member to gain invaluable training in a priority area of hematology care in their home countries. In June, 13 awardees were selected from 12 different countries to engage in clinical or laboratory training that will address these needs with targeted programs overseen by ASH members. This year’s VTP recipients come from Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Mali, Nigeria, Peru, Thailand, and Uganda. Four of them are highlighted below: Dr. Vesselina Goranova-Marinova of Bulgaria will travel to Germany to undergo a 12-week training program in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) with Dr. Rupert Handgretinger at the Children’s Hospital of Tuebingen University. Her goal is to be able to perform HSCT in patients at her home institution, care for them in the period of aplasia, and recognize »» ASH VTP Page B-18 ASH News Daily Staff Editor Michael Bishop, MD University of Chicago Managing Editor Karen Learner Editorial Assistant Tiffany Reid Director of Communications Jenifer Hamilton Production Coordinators Tim Mercer Jenn Waters CustomNEWS, Inc.
