Sunday, December 9, 2012 THROMBOSIS Upping the Ante on Newer Anticoagulants BY MARC J. KAHN, MD, MBA over. Initially introduced as a rodenticide in 1948, and approved for human use in 1954, warfarin remains the most widely prescribed oral anticoagulant in North America. The question remains, however, for how long? Tomorrow’s Education Program session, “The New Era in Antithrombotic Therapy,” will be held from 7:00 to 8:30 a.m. in the Sidney Marcus Auditorium, Level 4, Building A, in the Georgia World Congress Center. The session will be repeated in the afternoon, from 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. in the same location. Jeffrey I. Weitz, MD, from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, will chair the session. Dr. Weitz, professor of medicine and executive director of the Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute in Canada, is a noted expert in the biochemistry of coagulation and has been involved in a number of clinical trials investigating the role of anticoagulants in managing thrombotic disorders. When asked about the focus of the session, he responded, “New antithrombotic drugs are changing the way we manage patients with arterial and venous thrombosis. Aimed at the clinician, this session will provide an update on not only when and how to use the novel agents, but also when not to use them.” Dr. Weitz will give the first lecture in this session. His talk will focus on the pharmacology of the newer oral anticoagulants. He will also discuss current indications for these new drugs and will provide information to allow clinicians to use the right drug, for the right purpose, at the right time. Alan K. Jacobson, MD, from V.A. Loma Linda Healthcare System, will lead the second part of the session and will be discussing the future of warfarin. Dr. Jacobson, a cardiologist and associate chief of staff for research, has been director of the Cardiology Anticoagulation Clinic. He has seen the initiation and de- T Meet the New Blood Editor Mark your calendar to stop by the ASH booth (#3105) tomorrow from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. to meet Dr. Bob Löwenberg, Blood’s editor-inchief designee, and Dr. Nancy Berliner, deputy editor designee. © 2011 Bristol-Myers Squibb All rights reserved. Dr. Jacobson will also discuss the role of the newer agents in the management of non-valvular atrial fibrillation. The third part of this Education session will concentrate on the simultaneous use of multiple agents in patients with cardiovascular disease. Jessica L. Mega, MD, MPH, a cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA, will ASH NEWS DAILY Page A–3 ® serve as the discussant. Dr. Mega is an investigator for the Thrombosis In Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) group and has recently been the lead author on an article appearing in the New England Journal of Medicine discussing the use of rivaroxiban in patients with acute coronary syndromes. Dr. Mega will also discuss the use of triple therapy, dual antiplatelet therapy plus an oral anticoagulant, in patients with atrial fibrillation, acute coronary syndrome, or recent percutaneous coronary intervention. This session is timely as the number of alternatives to warfarin continues to expand. The precise role for newer anti-thrombotics in the management of atherosclerotic disease, atrial fibrillation, and other thrombotic disorders is in a state of flux. We anxiously anticipate the antiquation of the antics of antediluvian antithrombotic therapies. Dr. Kahn indicated no relevant conflicts of interest.
