As an intern, there were no opportunities for a research or military academic position, but what happened next is one of the moments in his career he remembers most vividly. While in the then notoriously hectic Vanderbilt Hospital Emergency Room, he received a call from celebrated hematologist and William Dameshek protégé, Col. William Crosby. Col. Crosby invited the intern to come to the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research for his service time. “And there it was,” Dr. George recalled. “A career.” For the success he’s experienced throughout his career, he honors the mentors who invested in him along the way. “I have no wish-I’dknown issues. Among the many hats he wore at ASH, Dr. George served as president in 2005; helped to establish the ITP Clinical Practice Guideline; was fundamental in the construction of one of ASH’s most essential career development programs, the Clinical Research Training Institute, now celebrating its 10th year; and was crucial to the development of the ASH Mentor Award and the ASH-Amos Medical Faculty Development Program. But before there were numerous hats and accompanying accolades, there was a curious Ohio State student. Dr. George studied under renowned hematologist Dr. Bertha Bouroncle. He admired the relationships she maintained and the genuine care she displayed for each of her patients, despite her New NHLBI Director and Editor of Blood to Speak Prior to Plenary Session This Afternoon oday Gary H.
