ASH Supports the Future of Hematology
Through the ASH Scholar Awards Program
F
or almost three decades,
ASH has supported more
than 250 fellows and junior
faculty in both basic and clinical/
translational research by providing partial salary or other support
during the critical period required
for completion of training and
achievement of status as an independent investigator. The awards,
in the amount of $100,000 for fellows and $150,000 for junior faculty over a two- to three-year period,
are made possible through grants
from the corporate community, individual donors, foundations, and
funds committed by the Society.
The following class of ASH Scholars began their awards on July 1,
2013.

ASH Honorific Awards
The Society's most prestigious awards recognize individuals within the
global hematology community who have made significant contributions
to the field with the following awards:
* Wallace H. Coulter Award for Lifetime Achievement in
Hematology
* Henry M. Stratton Medal
* William Dameshek Prize
* E. Donnall Thomas Lecture and Prize
* Ernest Beutler Lecture and Prize

ASH Mentor Awards
The ASH Mentor Awards honor those who have served as exceptional
role models and who influenced the hematology community through
mentoring. Each year two outstanding mentors drawn from the
areas of basic science, clinical investigation, education, or clinical/
community care will be honored.

New nomination process: Nominations for the ASH Honorific
and Mentor Awards will now be accepted throughout the year.
Any nomination submitted prior to the award deadline will be
considered for the current year's review cycle. Nominations

Ana Narla, MD
Dr. Narla is currently an assistant professor in the Division of
Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
at Stanford
University
School
of
Medicine.
After completing her
undergraduate degree
in biomedical ethics at
Brown University, she
received her
MD
from Ana Narla, MD
the
University of Pennsylvania. She then
completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of California
- San Francisco and a fellowship
in Hematology/Oncology at Children's Hospital Boston and DanaFarber Cancer Institute. Beginning
in 2007, she was a postdoctoral research fellow in the laboratory of
Dr. Benjamin L. Ebert. Her research
efforts in the Ebert lab focused on
studying the pathophysiology of
ribosomopathies and understanding the mechanism(s) by which
various drugs can enhance erythropoiesis in these conditions. With
her ongoing clinical and scientific
interests in pediatric bone marrow
failure syndromes, she accepted
a faculty position at Stanford University in July 2013 with the goal of
pursuing a career as a translational
physician scientist in benign hematology. Her laboratory will continue
to focus on ribosomopathies. Given
the obvious role of ribosomes in
the pathophysiology of bone marrow failure syndromes, identifying
potential drug targets to kill cells
with haploinsufficiency or to rescue
them by promoting their differentiation could have significant therapeutic implications. Her goal is to
continue to contribute to effective
disease management for patients
as well as to pursue novel scientific
discoveries to further the understanding of human hematopoiesis.
