he battlefield and the inner
city have provided an unfortunate
testing arena for the
use of resuscitative measures in the
treatment of victims of trauma. Cur-
rently, traumatic injury remains the
leading cause of death in patients up
to age 44, with hemorrhage being the
leading cause of preventable death
in this population. Therefore, of
particular interest to hematologists
is the proper use of blood products
and crystalloid in the management
of hemorrhage and coagulopathy in
this difficult patient population.

the inventions of Wallace H. Coulter, whose legacy
ASH will honor this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the
Special Symposium on Innovation and the Future of
Hematology, which will take place in Hall F in the
convention center.

Next time you check a CBC, remember Wallace
Coulter. He made it happen. He was not a physician.
His formal education ended after only three years
of college, but his passion for biology and electronics
