he Blood Journal Online is
more than just a location
where you can look up journal articles. The sophisticated site
provides you with the capabilities to
identify key pieces of hematologic
research through advanced search
features, allows you to automatically generate alerts that will notify you when new articles are published, and gives you the capability
to track hematologic sub-specialties
via RSS feeds.
This evening's session will provide you with an overview of
these and other features used to
mine scientific literature. The new
blood hub™ community mini-sites
that are content-specific aggregators covering the areas of pediatric
hematology,
thrombocytopenia,
multiple myeloma, and sickle cell
disease will also be covered.
The "coming soon" section of
the presentation will provide a
preview of the new design for the
Blood Journal website, which will
include new features, capabilities,

his afternoon, the Society will
recognize Sir David Weatherall, MD, University of Oxford,
with the 2013 Wallace H. Coulter
Award for Lifetime Achievement in
Hematology for more than five decades of excellence in translational
research leadership, novel discoveries, and a commitment to improving clinical care for thousands of
patients throughout the developing
world. "To receive this wonderful
award is a great honor for which I
thank ASH most wholeheartedly,"
Dr. Weatherall remarked. Having
witnessed the focus of the field
shift many times in 50-plus years,
he also accepts this award "on behalf of that declining group of hematologists who still recognize the
importance of the red blood cell."
The award, named for Wallace
Henry Coulter, engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur, commemorates Mr. Coulter's innovation and
entrepreneurship, traits that were
exemplified in his discovery of the
Coulter Principle, a proven theory
that gave way to methodology for
counting, measuring, and evaluating cells and microscopic particles
suspended in fluid, and the Coulter Counter,® which paved the way
for the complete blood count. In
the same vein, Dr. Weatherall has
demonstrated lifetime achievement
