researcher, she will review the evidence and role of inherited thrombophilia testing in daily practice.
Doing something you're passionate about, having a connection with
a productive research mentor, and
seizing opportunities were key factors that contributed to Dr. Middeldorp's early success as a researcher.
"If you get an opportunity, you have
to grab it and you have to do it very
well. My mentor Dr. Harry Büller gave me a lot of opportunities
to present my research, and I think
that helped." Dr. Middeldorp chose
a career in research because she
could answer meaningful questions
for patients in an area where evidence is lacking. "Pregnancy is such
a unique time in life, and if we can
contribute a little bit of evidence it
can have a great impact on patients'
lives," she states. "Even if studies

he Friday Scientific Workshop
on Inherited Hematopoietic
Malignancies marks a new
era for the Society as we sharpen
our focus on the whys of hematologic malignancy. This new workshop,
chaired by Dr. Lucy A. Godley, was
prompted by a brief, but productive, lunch meeting at the 2015 annual meeting. Attendees recognized
the need for a new Friday Scientific
Workshop that would "discuss the
scientific advances in understanding the pathogenesis of cancer development in individuals and families with germline mutations and
predisposition to bone marrow-
derived malignancies." The workshop was divided into six sessions,
grouped roughly by phenotype.
The group of speakers was diverse,

and Dr. Godley stated that their
worldwide representation reflected
the international aspect of the field.
Drs. Anna Brown and Tim Graubert led the first session on platelet
dysfunction, focusing on mutations
in RUNX1, ETV6, and ANKRD26.

These syndromes tend to cause a
period of nearly lifelong thrombocytopenia and/or platelet dysfunction followed often, but not always,
by the development of hematologic
