The Pediatric Cancer Genome
Project is the accomplishment of
which Dr. Downing is most proud.
Through this unprecedented effort
to discover the origins of childhood
cancer and seek new cures, researchers have learned that nearly
one in 10 pediatric cancer patients
are born with genetic mutations in
their normal DNA that predispose
them to cancer. "These changes,
called germline mutations, are
found in the DNA of every cell,

not just tumor cells," Dr. Downing
explains. "Such mutations were
known to exist, but their frequency
was a mystery. These mutations
can be used to help guide treatment
and advance precision medicine.
In some cases, entire families may
benefit from genetic testing and
counseling."
Those discoveries led St. Jude
Children's Research Hospital to create a Cancer Predisposition Clinic
to evaluate and care for children at
increased genetic risk for cancer. Dr.

Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), which eliminated the
Sustainable Growth Rate and
replaced it with the Quality
Payment Program (QPP), provides a set of useful resources
for hematologists. The QPP is
composed of the Merit-Based
Incentive Payment System
(MIPS) and the Advanced Payment Models. One of these new
resources consists of the ASH
partnership with Healthmonix,
a 2017 Qualified MIPS Registry.
ASH members can now sign
up to report data for the 2017
performance year for MIPS
through Healthmonix's MIPSPRO. Additionally, there are
new resources to help providers find out if they are exempt
from participating in MIPS,
and how to avoid a negative
payment adjustment in 2019.
