Trainee Council

to the Trainee Council. One of my
goals as part of the council is to bring
awareness of the different career
paths available for trainees such as
AYA oncology, and transitional care
for nonmalignant disorders such as
sickle cell disease and hemophilia.
I believe that exposing trainees to
this population not only increases
awareness of the disparities this
population experiences; it increases
research interest, and encourages
changes to treatment guidelines
with the goal of improving care.
Participating in the Trainee Council has been an amazing experience.
I have been able to interact with a
multitude of different people that all

have the same goal of expanding hematology education for trainees, increase hematology interest in medical students, and continue to help
expand the services ASH provides.
What are some of the best resources
offered by the Trainee Council?
LI: There are countless resources offered, such as ASH Trainee
Day, the Grants Clearinghouse,
and TraineE-News, among others.
Trainee Day occurs yearly at the
ASH annual meeting, and we are in
the process of revamping it to provide a more interactive and handson experience. The Grants Clearinghouse is an extensive database that
catalogs grants and awards for all
levels of training, providing an efficient way to search for awards in

"The field of medicine is never stagnant, so the
educational resources and opportunities available for
trainees need to progress with the times. The goal
continues to be the expansion of services for all trainees
from medical students through fellowship and throughout PhD training. I believe the Trainee Council exemplifies the commitment ASH has to future hematologists."
one convenient location. It includes
links to the respective sites for
each funding opportunity with all
complete application instructions.
TraineE-News is a quarterly email
newsletter which includes a case
study and articles covering various
topics relevant to trainees. I encourage everyone to visit www.hematology.org/trainees for a complete list of
the resources available. This year

will bring some amazing changes
and additions to these tools that we
are very excited about.
Why should trainees join the Trainee
Council?
LI: It is a great way to get involved in ASH and to be an active
voice for trainees. Getting involved
in organizations or committees
is the most efficient way to make
changes in your field of interest. If
you have new ideals or proposals,
we encourage you to apply to be a
member of the Trainee Council.

Atlanta Fun Facts

can we cut to make
some of this fit...--->?

Atlanta was originally to be
named Terminus and Marthasville (in honor of Martha, Governor Wilson Lumpkin's daughter). It got its current name
from railroad engineer J. Edgar
Thompson. The name "Atlanta"
is thought to be a shortened
version of "Atlantica-Pacifica."

HELP SHAPE
HEMATOLOGY
HEALTH-CARE
POLICY.

Atlanta was the only city in North
American to be destroyed as an
act of war, when General Sherman burned it to the ground in
1864. Only 400 buildings survived, but the city was able to
rebuild itself. For this reason, the
city's symbol is a phoenix.
There are more than 71 streets
with a variation of the name
"Peachtree," thought to come
from the corruption of the
pronunciation over the years
of the Native American village
"Standing Pitch Tree." The
name is also thought to have
evolved from "pitch tree,"
which is what the native pine
trees were called.

APPLY TO BECOME AN
ASH® CONGRESSIONAL FELLOW!
This fellowship aims to provide education about the policy-making
process, as well as teach fellows about Congress' relationship
with the hematology community. The selected hematologist will
work for a full academic year in a Congressional office on Capitol
Hill and help shape hematology health-care policy.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta
International Airport is the
world's busiest airport, since
Atlanta is just a three-hour
flight from many major American cities.

Atlanta is Georgia's fifth capital. Savannah, Augusta, Louisville, and Milledgeville have
also held the title.
