Honored Wallace H. Coulter for Contributions to
Hematology, Receives Wallace H. Coulter Award in 2017

arshall A. Lichtman, MD,
of the University of Rochester School of Medicine
and Dentistry (Rochester, NY)
has been awarded the 2017 Wallace H. Coulter Award for Lifetime
Achievement in Hematology. Despite having an outstanding 51year career as an educator, mentor,
researcher, and physician, Dr. Lichtman responded to the news of
the award with humility, noting his
surprise. "There are so many [ASH]
members of broad accomplishment
who are worthy of this award." The
Wallace H. Coulter Award is the
Society's highest honor, whose late
namesake was a prolific inventor
and engineer best known for developing the Coulter principle -
a method that revolutionized the
use of basic blood tests to screen
for disease.
Dr. Lichtman is professor emeritus in the departments of medicine

the hematologic community. Oliver W. Press, MD, PhD, and Ronald
Hoffman, MD, were recognized this
year for their outstanding commitment to training and career development of early-career hematologists
with the 2017 Mentor Awards. ASH
will present Drs. Press and Hoffman
with their awards today during the

1:30 p.m. in Hall C2-C3 of the Georgia World Congress Center. This
award, established in 2006, serves
to recognize hematologists who
have excelled in mentoring trainees
and colleagues. Mentees shared the

at the start of his medical career,
his trajectory looked quite different. Originally Dr. Lichtman, who
was always interested in coupling
research with medical practice, was
determined to learn more about
the newly discovered hormone aldosterone - used to influence salt
and water balance, and thought to
be related to blood pressure control.
In the summer between his first and
second years of medical school, he
was advised to reach out to hematologist and leading molecular endocrinologist Dr. Avery Sandberg
of Roswell Park Memorial Institute.
Dr. Sandberg took it upon himself
to teach his new eager student all
about marrow cell identification,
and with time, Dr. Lichtman found
that the ability to diagnose one's
own cases by obtaining and analyz-

extremely gratifying, and the process of hematopoiesis, fascinating.
"I became enamored of blood cells,
their origins, structure, and functions," he recalled.
