SAN DIEGO Daily News HIGHLIGHTS ISSUE Teaching for Learning That Lasts: The Pauline Cerasoli Lecture By Deb Nerud Vernon BS, MA, EMT-P T Elizabeth Mostrom o open the 16th annual Pauline Cerasoli Lecture January 23, presenter Elizabeth Mostrom, PT, PhD, posed the question, “What makes for good teaching and good learning; learning that has staying power and meaning?” Dimensions of good teaching include competence, a bond of humanity, mutual respect, and trust, said Mostrom. “A good teacher knows when to let go and to pass the baton. One who is an advocate for his or her students and one who leaves learners with life lessons.” “Thoughtful teachers can translate disciplinary knowledge or skill so that others can understand,” Mostrom said. “And, second, they are considerate and kind and can respond in ways that are encouraging when necessary.” Mostrom referred to the book The Tact of Teaching: The Meaning of Pedagogical Thoughtfulness to define another quality of a good teacher—general tact. First, however, Weber explained, “From years of collecting data, ABPTS knows that intrinsic factors are the predominant motivators for those seeking specialist certification. Your ‘class’ of specialists was no exception, as the top 5 reasons to pursue specialist certification were Save the Date! CSM returns to Las Vegas!
