Sanders This 25-year-old course, long the host of the annual Byron Nelson Classic Tour stop, needed not only to replace the original irrigation system, but also to fix issues with over-planted Live Oak trees, deteriorating cart paths, contaminated green surfaces, hard-to-maintain bunkers and an 18th hole water feature that was reportedly designed more to create a nice backdrop for a wedding lawn than an integral part of a good closing golf hole. The job was made even more difficult because it had to please three distinctly different sets of customers: resort guests, club members and PGA Tour players and sponsors. The result? Resort and guest fees have increased; private membership initiation fees have increased to $75,000; and tournament and outing bookings have increased. There also has been an increase in interest from Tour pros, some of whom have skipped the event in the past because they were unhappy with the course. And, perhaps best of all in these times, the tournament’s sponsorship has been renewed through 2012. Golf Inc. March/April 2009
