Golf Inc - April 2008 - (Page 33) JIM SEELEY KemperSports Executive Vice President, Bandon Dunes Resort, Bandon, Ore. A golf industry veteran of nearly 40 years, Seeley’s current responsibilities are focused on running the highly acclaimed Bandon Dunes Resort, with additional operational responsibility for the Independence Club in Richmond, Va. Even those immense roles pale compared to responsibility for all KemperSports-managed facilities after joining the company 13 years ago following an 11-year career with PGA Tour Properties. Seeley aptly characterizes Bandon Dunes as “a property that started with very modest goals and mushroomed into so much larger a property than anybody could have imagined.” The original 21 lodging rooms now number nearly 250 and a fourth course is under construction. As a measure of the esteem in which he is held by KemperSports, the company’s annual award to its top GM has been named the James R. Seeley General Manager of the Year trophy. SAM LOGAN General Manager of Golf Operations, Punta Espada Golf Club, Cap Cana, Dominican Republic Logan has parlayed his bilingual skills and operational expertise into a splendid career in the Caribbean and Mexico. He was the opening GM for management company Troon Golf at Cap Cana’s Punta Espada Golf Club three years ago, after previously opening courses in Mexico, Punta Mita and El Tigre. Cap Cana has a second course under construction, and at least three more on the drawing board. Logan was a trailblazer in converting the Mexican work days from a six-day, 42- to 44-hour work week to a five-day week at nine to 10 hours per shift. Logan said that employee surveys showed both productivity and morale improved under the new system. He also takes pride in Punta Espada’s golf shop, where he does all the buying. “My goal is to reach $50 in average sales [per golfer] per month,” he said. “We broke it once, and we’re at $44 and change now. The national [U.S.] average is about $18.50.” April 2008 No more guesswork.
