Golf Inc - August 2008 - (Page 10) Top News GPSI, under new CEO, files suit against ProLink GPS Industries, which hired former Parview chief executive David Chessler as its new chief executive officer in June, has filed a patent infringement suit against its leading competitor, ProLink Solutions. The suit, filed July 17 in U.S. District Court in Illinois, alleges that ProLink Solutions and other parties, including ABC National Television Sales Inc. and LinksCorp Inc., infringed upon one of GPSI’s patents relating to on-screen Hills/Forrest launches partnership with Ochoa The principals at Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates have created a new partnership with the brother of LPGA star Lorena Ochoa to design golf courses in Mexico. The new firm, Ochoa/Hills Golf Design, will look to take advantage of the fast-growing Mexican golf market. Alejandro Ochoa, whose sister is the world’s No. 1 woman player, will serve as chief business development officer. Ochoa also will be involved in various aspects of course design, which the 31-year-old sports executive described as a developing passion. He will work closely with Gary Hart, d director of the Pacific and Western U.S. R Regions for Hills/Forrest. The firm already has two projects under way on t the Baja Peninsula, Paraiso del Mar i in La Paz and Punta Lobos in Todos Santos, and is involved in a third as-yetunannounced course. Movers&Shakers Doug Howe Executive Vice President Century Golf Partners Howe, previously executive vice president for new business development for ClubCorp, recently moved across town in Dallas to take a similar position with Century Golf Partners. One major difference: Howe will join CEO Jim Hinckley and Greg Adair, Larry Galloway and Ken Story as a partner in the Century Golf Partners course ownership and management operation, an opportunity that was not available in the KSL Capitalowned ClubCorp organization. “We’re gearing up to grow and we wanted to get more firepower,” Hinckley said of Howe’s addition. “We see lots of opportunity out there, especially for golf courses currently owned by real estate developers and homebuilders. We’ve kind of gone through the private equity round.” Hinckley knows Howe’s capabilities well; like Hinckley until he left ClubCorp in 2002, Howe was a ClubCorp lifer, beginning as a busboy and working up to responsibility for domestic and international club operations for ClubCorp’s country clubs, business and sports clubs, as well as daily fee clubs. d i s pl ay of c e nt r a l ly t r ans m itte d advertising and tournament scoring information. The suit also claims that ProLink has falsely claimed that it holds rights in another GPSI patent that relates to position-based hole advance and screen scrolling technology. The action follows a suit filed against GPS Industries by ProLink in November 2007 alleging that GPSI is in violation of three patents held by ProLink involving GPS system display monitors and zone detection technology used in relaying course yardage and information to the cart-mounted GPS system. The suit is GPSI’s first major move since Chessler took over as CEO following the March 30 death of Douglas Wood. A member of the board of directors for five years, Wood was named CEO in November 2007 after the resignation of Robert Silzer Sr. Chessler had been head of Parview until its merger with ProLink in January 2004.
