Golf Inc - August 2008 - (Page 13) Development Recap WALES The Twenty Ten course at Celtic Manor, built specifically to host the 2010 Ryder Cup, has officially opened in Wales. The £16 million course, part of the Celtic Manor Resort, was designed by Ross McMurray of European Golf Design. Nine new holes were built to go with nine existing holes that were significantly reconstructed. IRELAND BULGARIA County Wicklow project to include golf facility Harlequin Resorts and the Brennan Hotel Group have launched a new €100 million resort and recreational complex at Brittas Bay in County Wicklow. The project will include an 18-hole golf course, 12 holiday cottages and 142 guest suites. As part of its familyfriendly approach, the complex will offer a spa and fitness center, swimming pool and clubhouse, with an indoor sports academy and golf instructional facility. Harlequin Resorts also is involved in the development of a €150 million hotel and golf complex in County Waterford. That project, to be built in a joint venture with a local developer, will include a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. Construction on the Brittas Bay project is expected to take two years. Black Sea course opens at resort area A new private club opened in June at a Black Sea resort near Varna. The course, part of the €103 million BlackSeaRama complex, is the second in Bulgaria. Nine holes are open now, with a second nine to be added soon, developers said. The complex also includes a number of luxury villas and houses, a mineral water pool, gym and hotel. A winery also will be built, utilizing grapes from a nearby vineyard. The winery will produce mostly white wines, with the first bottles to be available in three years. Membership in the club will cost €25,000. Among the investors are Krasimir Gergo, president of the Bulgarian Golf Association. ENGLAND 9-hole course planned for clifftop site Construction of a 9-hole course in Yorkshire has received approval from local government officials. The 25-acre course will be built near the Reighton Gap Holiday Park south of Filey. It will be developed by Bourne Leisure for guests of a nearby holiday caravan park. The site was formerly used for agriculture. It will be closed from November through February because of environmental concerns that use during those months would interfere with wintering birds. Operators of nearby golf clubs have voiced opposition to the project, claiming that it would hurt their business. Three nine-hole facilities already are located in the area.
