Golf Inc - August 2008 - (Page 21) “Wi-Fi access is almost mandatory as far as I’m concerned,” Chris said. “It’s not even really conducting business anymore, it’s just communicating.” According to Nicholas, even the most well-appointed business center doesn’t need to take up a lot of space. “We’ve been camouflaging them as libraries or trophy rooms,” he said. “You can fit them nicely into just 200- to 300-square feet of space.” Maximizing space Today more than ever, architects are being asked to maximize available space to the fullest extent. “People are still primarily building the 25,000- to 40,000 square-foot clubhouse, but they’re trying to do more in that space,” Nicholas said. One way to do more with less is to limit the size of locker rooms, Nicholas said. “You still have a full complement of lockers and showers but the physical space has been significantly reduced, almost cut in half,” he said. As far as interiors are concerned, Barrett said his firm has focused on more traditional designs featuring muted colors and casual furniture. “(Clubs) want something that’s going to last,” he said. “Traditional design can run the gamut from mountain lodge to formal English and French, but it stays away from contemporary or trendy styles.” What’s ahead for golf clubhouses? Continued family involvement, enthusiasm for fitness and technological advances will drive clubhouse trends going forward, experts say. On the dining side, expect features like wine rooms to become prevalent. “They’re already an ongoing request for us,” Barrett said. “It’s one more feature that a club can offer.” On the tech side, Chris said to expect more demand for video conferencing. “This gas mess is probably going to speed it up,” he said. “It’s going to be a choice between video conferencing or a $1,000 plane ticket.” One thing the golf industry can count on for certain, Orkus said, will be the need to change. “If you don’t change, the bottom line is you’re going to be left behind,” he said. —Scott Desiere Dan Nicholas will be a panel member on a session, “Clubhouse, Design, Operations & Amenities,” at the fall Golf Inc. Conference Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at the Camelback Inn in Scottsdale, Ariz. August 2008 www.GolfIncMagazine.com 21 http://www.mai-architects.com http://www.GolfIncMagazine.com
