Golf Inc - August 2008 - (Page 35) Donald Carter| president, Urban Design Associates, Pittsburgh Carter has a bachelor of architecture from Carnegie Mellon and also studied urban design and planning at the University of Edinburgh. He joined Urban Design Associates in 1973. Among the projects that distinguished his firm was the Celebration community, built at Disney World. “We studied housing in Atlanta, Richmond and New Orleans and elsewhere in the Southeast and came up with six housing types, very traditional Southern housing,” he said. “It was a traditional American neighborhood from the day it opened.” The Celebration golf course had unique style as well. Fairways were not lined with houses blocking views of the course and creating tunnels for players. The course sits in the middle of the project and is surrounded by a public road. “That way everyone felt that the golf course was theirs,” he said. “It improved everyone’s property values.” His firm also emphasizes sustainable design on courses, including recycling gray water and storm water retention. “We always try to do our designs in the context of where we are,” Carter said. “We did a golf course community in Calgary, for example, by first looking at the differences in vegetation, topography, native plants and water courses.” One hallmark of his firm’s work, he said, “is involving citizens, the stakeholders, in what we do from the beginning of a project, instead of waiting for the NIMBYs to show up at public meetings.” Carter has set up public participation processes as a core discipline in his firm. |Gil Martinez| president, GMA International, Newport Beach Martinez holds degrees in landscape architecture, urban planning and administration from California universities. He has worked in planning, construction and landscape architecture for more than 30 years, mostly in his own firm. Golf has always been one of his passions, and after doing one golf community, he kept doing more and more. At one point, he had five offices with 85 employees. “But in the ’90s, I decided I wanted to concentrate on quality rather than quantity,” Martinez said. He now has a single office with a staff of 14. His business has followed the path of the baby boomers, first doing communities where boomers could buy their first homes. He then moved on up to planning country club community properties and now residential resorts. His firm has worked on projects all over the world including Mexico, French Polynesia, Chile, S cotland, the Philippines, Thailand, Europe and Africa. |John Goldwyn| Associate and senior project planner, Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo, London Goldwyn has worked f ive ye ars for WATG, an international design consultant to the hospitality industry. He previously worked for a London firm and with companies in Bangkok and Singapore. He has a degree in architecture from Leeds and did graduate studies in architecture and urban planning at Greenwich in London. “I genuinely believe I have the best job in the world, traveling everywhere and taking inspiration from the world around me,” he said. August 2008 www.GolfIncMagazine.com 35 Recently, he sees a shift to “core golf,” away from positioning villas along fairways but instead clustering homes in a town center or village. “We work based on a triple bottom line,” he also said. “We have to make money first of all. But we also keep in mind how we impact communities and the ecological bottom line as well.” Some projects have been in developing nations like Kazakhstan and India. “It’s fascinating to see how they’re building communities in these areas and what they aspire to be. They don’t necessarily want to imitate London or the United States. They want to do their own thing.” http://www.urbandesignassociates.com/ http://www.urbandesignassociates.com/ http://www.gmainet.com/ http://www.watg.com http://www.GolfIncMagazine.com
