Golf Inc - August 2008 - (Page 4) staff From the Editors Jack Crittenden, Publisher and Editor-in-chief | 858-300-3201 Giving back to the game I started playing golf with my two daughters about eight months ago, and wrote about the experience in our March issue (“The Power of One”). At the time, we introduced our readers to the concept of Just One — which urges everyone in the golf industry to play golf with one new player this year and to craft the experience so that it is an extraordinary one for that individual. Since then, I have tried to play nine holes every week with one of my daughters. Both my 6- and 9-year-old now have their own sets of clubs and the oldest is enrolled in golf camp this summer — at her urging. For the three of us, golf has become a family event. which received a $1.5-million renovation in 2003, is one of the region’s best shortgame facilities. It is both challenging and fun for new players and those of us who play with them. The lessons are free, and the course boasts of teaching more than 11,000 kids since 1994. My daughters can be included in that number. And even for me, a parent who can afford lessons, the ease of use and accessibility has helped to further lower that entry barrier into regular play. While it takes individuals to bring new players to the game, it is courses like Colina Park Golf Course and programs like The First Tee that turn first-time golfers into lifelong enthusiasts. At the same time, these programs teach kids about life, responsibility and character development. The First Tee has set the stage for player development in the United States. And now for the first time, the non-profit organization is looking to expand its reach outside of the United States. By building quality short courses and combining golf and life lessons, the First Tee has an opportunity to help build players for the future across the globe. The development of such programs will not be easy or cheap. But, there is a strong history in the golf industry of giving back. Companies like Toro, Nike and others have been generous donors in the United States and abroad. If you are outside the United States, we encourage you to contact The First Tee and explore the opportunities for your country. If you are a vendor, we encourage you to donate. And if you are an individual, please introduce one new person to the game of golf this year, and then send us an e-mail telling us your —Jack Crittenden story. While it took my initiative to get them on the course the first time, our continued play has been made possible by a First Tee program in our city. We play at Colina Park Golf Course in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego. Run by Pro Kids, it follows the same model that First Tee has used across the United States. It caters primarily to “underserved kids,” giving them the opportunity “to learn the game of golf and develop values and life skills that will aid them in their future endeavors,” their Web site states. While my daughters are not “underserved,” the course and lessons have made it much easier for them to get to know and enjoy the game.
