Golf Inc. - October 2008 - (Page 10) Top News People on the move Architect Matt Dye passes away at 48 Matt Dye, golf course architect and a member of the high-profile Dye family of course designers, died Aug. 19 at his home in San Diego. The 48-year-old had been diagnosed with colon cancer. Starting in 1989, Dye worked with his cousin, Perry Dye of Dye Designs, designing, shaping and building courses all over the world. He worked on designs in Japan, Thailand and Mexico. In the U.S., he was involved with projects such as the Las Vegas Paiute Resort in Las Vegas, The Promontory in Park City, Utah, and Trump National Golf Club in Los Angeles. Dye started his own design business in 2002. His solo projects include El Rio Country Club in Laughlin, Nev., the Links at Sleepy Ridge in Orem, Utah and Dos Lagos Golf Club in Corona, Calif. Another of his designs, The Ledges in St. George, Utah, was named one of the 10 best new public courses in 2007 by Golf Digest magazine. Survivors include his wife Karen, three children and his mother, Ann Dye. Longtime golf administrator in Europe and the Middle East Nick Tarratt has been named to head the new European Tour International Office in Dubai. Mike Kelly, former executive with Meadowbrook Golf, is the new executive director of golf operations for PGA West in La Quinta, Calif. Tony Wilkinson was named the new general manager of MacGregor Golf Europe. Kathee Dishner, former vice president of operations for Signet Golf Associates, is the new club manager at Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, Kathee Dishner N.C. Troon Golf has promoted D.J. Flanders to owner’s representative to oversee course development and Troon’s relationships with TDIC, the owning company of Abu Dhabi Golf Club, which is planning two courses at Sadiyaat Island. Ian Gardner has assumed Flanders’ former role as Abu Dhabi Golf Club general manager. Donald P. Emery is the new general manager/chief operating officer at Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla. KemperSports has promoted Val D’Souza to gene eral manager of B Butterfield Trail G Course in El Golf P Paso, Texas. OB Sports has p promoted Brett T Trenter to general Carl Swanback m manager at We-KoPa Golf Club in Ft. McDowell, Ariz., replacing original general manager Jeff Lessig, who is the new general manager at Indian Wells Golf Club in Indian Wells, Calif. South African project aimed at growing game A new project designed to promote golf among young people has been launched in South Africa. “Project Golf 2014,” an initiative inspired by the Women’s World Cup of Golf, seeks to produce 2,014 golfers — including many girls from disadvantaged backgrounds — by the year 2014. The drive is part of a larger effort by the Professional Golf Association of South Africa and the South African Golf Development Board to create one million new golfers in the country over a 21-year period. Under the agreement that took effect on Oct. 1, the John Deere Landscapes division will serve as a major channel partner for Syngenta’s golf and lawn care products. Steve Vincent, John Deere Golf North American sales manager for agronomic products, said the deal will provide more options for golf course operators to manage their courses. John Deere Landscapes, established in 2001 as a subsidiary of the John Deere Corp., currently has about 630 branches in the United States. 10 Golf Inc.
